Since someone mentioned having a GF4 Ti4200, thats an awsome card anyway, you are going to have a hard time replacing it. There is nothing short of a FX5900xt that will outpreform a Ti4200 in OpenGL. Anyway, replacing a nVidia with a nVidia is just swapping cards. (if you have suitably new drivers)

I know because I had a Ti4200 and tried several cards (benefit of working at a computer store) before makin up my mind, FX5200 = GF4MX with DX9, FX5600 = Better but no match for a Ti4200

The ti4200 may outperform the fx5600 a little bit in general but when you turn on aa or af the fx5600 greatly outperforms the ti4200.

No AA/AF:

With AA/AF:

The FX5900XT is a _lot_ faster then a ti4200 no matter what you do with it.

Gainward's FX5900 is lookin pretty good for the price ($190-ish USD). Would you rather have a 128meg/256bit card or a 256meg/128bit card for a game like Doom3? Assuming you can't go over $200....

I'm thinking the extra ram would be good for such a heavy game, but then again anything else wouldn't matter as much.

On the Doom 3 preview benchmarks that have been out there so far there's been a huge performance gap between the 128bit and 256bit cards and I doubt the extra ram will make any more then a marginal difference if any.

Has anybody tried a Geforce6800 ultra or GT yet? with the new drivers?
I have an 6800GT ordered should be here next week, or at least that is what www.alternate.es told me.
It would be cool to see a linux 3dgraphics chart. Where would the top ati cards place? Any speculations? Above or below the GF4 Ti 4200???
I know somebody out there must have some idea at wot a top 10 would look like. Would it be an all nvidia afair?

No, it's not.

A GF3 Ti200 works far better than a Radeon 9800xt (ati's best card that "works", and I use that term loosely, on linux).

I still get 110-120 FPS in UT2003 in Linux with my 9600pro. The driver is better than you want to give it, just not as good as Nvidia's or ATI's Windows driver.

Thanks for posting, I'm planing to get a GT card but could find it listed in the supported cards for the linux driver, I kind of guessed it would work fine as its based on the same chipset as all the 6800 series cards, now you've confirmed it works I'll definietly be getting one. Bring on DooM III already :D

Excuse my ignorance, but can anyone tell me if the nvidia drivers work well with multiple monitors?

I am currently using an ATI 9000 with 2 screens as a single desktop. This is fine with the xfree drivers for 2D, but 3D is abysmal due to DRI not working with Xinerama. The ATI drivers give better performance and, with a single monitor setup, are great but with dual monitor everything starts in the middle of the two screens which is a pain. Also, making an app fullscreen uses both monitors and there are some problems with anything which goes beyond about 2000 pixels horizontally.

What I would like is for apps to use one screen (the left by default) to start up in and maximise to, like Xinerama, to be draggable to either screen (ie a single Xsession), and good 3D performance on at least one screen (preferably both). Can TwinView do this? Or am I doomed to one setup for graphics and another for non-graphics critical apps? I don't really want to use 2 desktops.

Anyone running 2 screens on nVidia got the answer?

Cheers

I'm running two monitors with TwinView. I've used Gnome and Fluxbox. Everything works as you'd expect. Things maximize to their desktop, but you can drag into another.

The 3D thing is a bit annoying. If you run the same resolution on both monitors, then you're fine. A 3D app with use one monitor and make the other black. I, however, run two different resolutions, as one of my monitors is really crappy. 1600x1200 & 1024x768

When I try to run a game with any resolution near 1024x768, it puts it only on the smaller monitor. I can't get it to go on the big one. And when I bring the resolution up, weird stuff happens, like splitting between the monitors.

What I end up doing is running in windowed mode, which I can deal with. Besides this, everything is great.

Ok, I guess it must be the "xt" there that makes the difference because in here a gf fx5900 costs around €300.

I tried searching the web for differences between gf fx5900 and the xt and came up empty.
They are identical except the XT's core runs at 390mhz and the non XT runs at 400mhz so they perform nearly identical. Memory on both runs at 700mhz.

In case anyone was going to buy a card based on this, you should note that:

The fx5900 runs at 400core/850memory
the fx5900xt runs at 390core/700memory
The Gainward golden sample fx5900 runs at 440/900 (but we need an overclocking tool for linux that works with this card first)

I just got the gainward 5900 non-xt, and it runs amazingly

Thanks for the correction, not sure what article I got that info from.

The price difference between the XT and non-XT here is about 27% and the performance difference is only about 6% so the XT is a much better buy.

Performance difference from here:
http://graphics.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-13.html#unreal_tournament_2003

The price of a non-XT is getting pretty close to a 6800, if someone wants to spend that much they might as well spend a bit more and get the 6800. The non-XT here is about $335cnd and the 6800 is $390. (while the XT is $263cnd).

Looks like its a really thorough review, shame I cant read german.
I would like to see more reviews like that focused on linux.
Perhaps ATI versus NVIDIA!!! nothing fancy 9800pro against FX5900XT.

About the driver release for the NV 6800 it should be this week :)

As U heard nvidia will do the release during Sysgraph.

So Hopefully, it won't be so foolish to become poor to play doom3.

Retail of course. I bought the Gainward 5900 GS from a guy on another forums used for 150$ shipped. Cannot beat that, I say.

Thanks for the review! (Fluent German Here) They make a good point about the money we waste when we get a video card that has windows software along with it. Oh well...
