installing 1.4 with p4 stage3

hello, noob here...

i am trying to install 1.4, with the p4 stage3 stuff... i was under the impression that there would be linux sources in the tar file, but there isnt. and the nic that i have is an Intel Pro/1000 MT, which unfortunately needs the linux sources in order to compile... so, i'm stuck with no idea which way to go.. i dont think i can just download the sources and emerge them.. portage isnt there in the stage3 souces either.. it complains about not having a file(sorry, its a machine at the office.. and i forgot to write down what it actually says)...any suggestions as to how to procede?

oh.. and um.. which linux sources is a better choice to use? i read that the gentoo sources are a bit unstable.. what exactly is added to the gentoo-sources? looks like the live-cd is using the xfs sources.. is that a better choice?
