excuse me but what is the error that you receive?also remember that lsmod from gentoocd, if u don't chrooted before gives u the list of modules autoinstalled by Gentoo only for installation, not what u've choosed for your kernel..

Things to check:
- IDE disk driver
- driver for your IDE controller
- driver for your file system
- partition support (if you selected advanced partition selection, you must include MS-DOS partition support) |

Thanks,

Yes, I had to learn that the hard way. "MS-DOS" doesn't exactly sound Linux-related. |

OK, I've been trying to get a 2.6 kernel to boot for months now. I started a thread here.
I took the advice from this thread and recompiled with advanced partition selection and MS-DOS as suggested and it didn't work. Same old "VFS: unable to mount root fs"
So I tried it with and without...what gives? _________________ \0x44\0x72\0x69\0x6E\0x6B \0x62\0x65\0x65\0x72\n |

I think you misunderstood. You don't need "advanced partition selection" (if you don't mount Macintosh disks or the like). But if, and only if you choose "advanced partition selection", then you need to choose "MS-DOS partitions" as well, because Linux in fact uses the MS-DOS partitioning scheme. It is compiled in by default if you do not select "advanced partition selection".
Your problem must be elsewhere. I'll have a look at the thread you linked to. |

I had the same problem. I was using kernel 2.6.7 (gentoo-dev-sources)
I upgraded to gentoo-dev-sources 2.6.7-r3, and the problem no longer appears. |
