God I love Gentoo. I don't think I've ever had such a great experience in Linux. I downloaded, compiled, configured, and had the new kernel running in 10 minutes. If corporations would take a look at Gentoo, I bet we'd see an uprising in the corporate market. Nobody does package management as well as Gentoo, which is something enterprise customers need. The department I work for at school is going to start moving to Gentoo. We need to test Oracle though, but web servers and file servers will make that move this summer. |

We have been using red hat at work and recently "upgraded" to Enterprise 3.0 from RH9. Holy suck. We never had problems with RH9, but Enterprise hangs hard all the time and we have to pay for it! Sheesh.
When RH9 EOL'd, I decided to give Gentoo a try at home and I love it. However, for the corporate world, Gentoo just isn't a player currently. It would definitely need a nod from IBM/Rational for ClearCase support for my company to even consider it. For the corporate world you do need an OS with some 3rd party vendor official blessings of compatability. _________________ "Blessed is he who finds happiness in his own foolishness, for he will always be happy". |

I've been using Gentoo for a couple of years now. Recently I started working for a new company that uses debian on their servers, and I find apt 'lacking' when compared to the usability of portage. _________________ my website |

i think it depends from which system you come. i used redhat until rh9 (in the beginning I even tried suse), then tried once fedora (don't do that), then I learned debian and finally I found gentoo.
sometimes one prefers a packaging system because he knows it better.
I maybe don't know all portage features but I am missing some features. to name two:
1. which file contains to which package
2. what files is a package going to install |
