Trying to get Gentoo going on my UltraSparc 5, and seem to be really hung up trying to get a 2.6 kernel going. Try as I might, I can't get the kernel to boot, I get this:
Code: | Sun Ultra 5/10 UPA/PCI (UltraSPARC-IIi 270MHz), No Keyboard
OpenBoot 3.15, 128 MB memory installed, Serial #10679014.
Ethernet address 8:0:20:a2:f2:e6, Host ID: 80a2f2e6.
Rebooting with command: boot disk
Boot device: /pci@1f,0/pci@1,1/ide@3/disk@0,0 File and args:
SILO Version 1.4.5
boot:
Allocated 8 Megs of memory at 0x40000000 for kernel
Loaded kernel version 2.6.6
Remapping the kernel... done.
Booting Linux...

And that's it - never goes farther. It's a headless machine, but I never hear any disk activity, and cannot ping, and even sending a break on the serial console doesn't get me back to the OBP prompt - it's hung hard.
I copied the gentoo-2.4 kernel from the cd, and it boots fine - but I cannot get it to execute the kernels I build. I tried compiling it with egcs64, but that just succeeded in setting me back a day while I reinstalled gcc-sparc64. I was thinking that my kernel wasn't being compiled as 64 bit, but it is:
Code: | root # file /boot/kernel-2.6.6
/boot/kernel-2.6.6: ELF 64-bit MSB executable, SPARC V9, version 1 (SYSV), statically linked, not stripped |
Versions of major stuff: Code: | [ebuild R ] sys-devel/gcc-3.3.3 +X -bootstrap -build -debug -gcj -java -multilib +nls -static 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-devel/gcc-sparc64-3.3.3 -debug 0 kB
[ebuild R ] sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2-r9 -build -debug +nls -nptl -(pic) 18 kB |
I've been pulling my hair out over this for a few days... I have this nagging feeling it's something simple I'm missing... like maybe MAKE_KERNEL_WORK=TRUE
Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

I remember checking my kernel size, and it was just under the 3.5 MB limit - but in my messing around trying to get it going it seems to have grown to 3.7 MB! Fixed that - made it smaller, but same problem still exists. Looks like you saved me from a problem I hadn't gotten far enough yet to encounter! Thanks.
I think I'll try a 2.4 kernel, just for kicks.
