I venture to guess it is a misspelling of the acronym for "MPEG-1 Part 3 Layer 3" that occurs when someone's right pinky slips off the P key onto the L key ;)

Some other console players:

moc
mpc (uses mpd)
ncmpc (uses mpd)

I use moosic which works in a similar way (I guess). It is a playlist manager only too and uses mpg123,... to play the files.
I made some hotkeys in ratpoison for play, next and stop so I can mostly use it without any visible user-interface.

The program currently supports ogg123, mpg123, mpg321, splay, madplay, and mikmod, xmp, and sox.

I'll try another tactic. If cplay is a front end for ogg123 (etc.) what do I need madplay for?

madplay is an mpeg decoder, does the same as mg123

as for mpd, i don't like that you can't make playlists on the fly or play seperate files easily, like cplay does

I've got xmms keyed into Fluxbox on Mod4+{z,x,c,v,b} and use xosd (for displaying) and xmms-shell (for hiding everything). It works great for me, and it'll just start when I press Mod4+x.

I like cplay! Been trying different console players, but this is what I've been looking for. Simple and easy. Thank for the tip JROCK2004
