Hi
Is it possible to use portage in a way that I can download the required packages on a different (not necessarily Linux) machine, then take those packages to my offline Gentto box and update packages? |

If your other box is a Gentoo as well, you can use 'emerge --fetchonly' to download the packages. Then use a CD or whatever, and put them in the /usr/portage/distfiles folder of your offline box.
Or you can download the files from the Gentoo mirrors servers (distfiles folder) and put them in your offline box. _________________ Gnome:

Cool - how can I ensure that the offline box uses the files I downloaded, and doesn't try to go online to check? |

If portage finds the files in the distfiles folder, it won't try to download them.
Of course eventually you'll run in to the problem that you won't be able to update your portage tree, so finding the old versions of the packages (that the offline machine thinks are new) can become a hassle.
If you can connect the machine to the internet at least for a while, it might be good to do an emerge (such as system update, 'emerge -uDf world') with the --fetchonly (f) flag, so you can do the actual emerging later.
As an advice for later life, I'm sure you could've found the answer by searching the forums for a while (though I know the search function sucks). But some people in the forums frown on someone asking questions that have basically been a) answered many times over or b) covered in the manuals or the gentoo-wiki page.
I'm not one of those people, though. _________________ Gnome:
