This is probably silly, but does just pressing enter (no password) work? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Have been looking at the docs for 1.4RC1, and I do have to say that for the Newbie, I can see where they would think that they have set a system password during the install.
Maybe the next release should have a little clarification on that.. _________________ Was Not My Fault This Time... |

Boot from it, chroot into your installation on the hard disk, and use the passwd command to reset the root password. Perhaps delta407's instructions linked to from https://forums.gentoo.org/faq.php#4 will be useful. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

nope, definetely not.
since the inst cd offers just the us keyb, i´wisely chaose a pwd which is keyb unspecific...f.e. "manganthe000".
so i think the error must have some other origin....
