mm-sources > 2.6.6-rc1-mm1 won't boot

i'm running gentoo on an IBM thinkpad T41 and mm-sources; however whatever version of mm-sources i try after 2.6.6-rc1 fails to boot, ending in a black screen just before the login prompt, and although i can connect using ssh that too hangs as soon as i enter my password

it happens whatever runlevel i try using: 5 3 or 1

any ideas anyone?

what hardware / system are you using? there don't seem to be too many people experiencing this... i'm on a T41 thinkpad with gcc-3.3.3, reiserFS, udev, radeon binary drivers

i tried love sources and they fail too - can't get any decent info from logs either
