X fails to start for users

I can run X and fluxbox just fine as root. But when I log in as my user I type "startx" I get the following error:

Xauth: timeout in locking authority file /home/chris/.Xauthority


This file doesn't exist. When I created the user I typed "adduser chris" /home/chris exists

Does X require permissions for users?

Looks like .Xauthority is an empty file until after login.
Create it, or copy it from /root.
Then startx should work just fine.
