Now before you start flaming me, yes I did a search and I read all about the whole
rm /etc/make.profile
ls -sf /usr/portage/profiles/default-x86-1.4 /etc/make.profile
Stage 1 1.4 on a pentium3
I get this error
Quote: | /etc/make.profile isn't available; an 'emerge sync' will probably fix this error.
Regenerating /etc/ld.so.cash...
| [/quote] |

Is your networking functioning correctly? Can you ping forums.gentoo.org, for example? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

well I can download the stage tarballs from the FTP.
I'm just using dhcp so when I did a
dhcpcd eth0
and then a
/sbin/ifconfig -a
I saw the ouput that says UP BLAHBLAHBLAH RUNNING
so I assume that I'm connected just fine.
not sure how to ping.
what's the syntax for pingging forums.gentoo.org?
<-- New to all this, bear with me please. |

If you can download the stage tarballs, your networking is fine. Maybe you have a firewall or something that is not letting rsync traffic through. Try downloading a portage snapshot tarball from http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/snapshots/, and then: cd to /usr, and tar xvjpf this snapshot. That will make it as if emerge sync had completed correctly and you can continue. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

You have a name resolution problem. What do the contents of /etc/resolv.conf say?

ok I have now fixed my DNS problem.. it was a name resolution problem.
I can ping fine, I had to start over.
but I still get the same problem when I start.
note: /etc/make.profile isn't available; an emerge sync will probably fix this.
regenerating /etc/ld.so.cache...
I did a stage 3 installation to avoid an emerge sync. will I have to do one anyways? |

Do you have things in /usr/portage/profiles? If so, you can make /etc/make.profile a symlink to one of them by hand. If /usr/portage is blank, you will need to either emerge sync or download a portage tree snapshot. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

Starting from zero, the snapshot will probably be a bit faster. Once you've got /usr/portage populated, emerge sync is much faster, because it ignores files that have not been modified. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
