I love being able to see processor/net/memory usage at all times. It struck me to wonder whether this is normal, so... over to you :-)

Almost a third of my XFce 4's Panel consists of HDD/network/Swap/CPU/RAM monitors, and I usually have top running in vt 6..

I only run one instance of top in a secluded vt, and that's the only system monitoring app I need. For the rest of stuff that's happening, I use a different method: I'm running a kernel with very few desktop performance patches using the anticipatory I/O scheduler. /proc/sys/vm/swappiness is 100.

This means that whenever something's taking up a lot of resources that I feel I have a need for at the moment, I notice it. If something takes hogs the hard disk, I can either just hear the sound the disk itself makes or hear a couple of jumps in the music if I'm listening to any. I know I could use a more desktop-oriented I/O scheduler, but I really don't mind jumpiness myself and I like being "in tune". If something takes all of my bandwidth, irssi will report higher ping times or pages will load slower in Firefox. If something wants all of the CPU cycles to itself... well, that I don't really notice without using top, thanks to the miracles of preemptive multitasking. Perhaps the subtlest effect comes from when something takes all of the X server's time... it makes everything ever so slightly laggy. Full words appear at once when I'm typing, the mouse cursor's movement isn't quite silken, etc...

Don't need system montors no more. They eat up CPU cycles anyway. I just use the force to feel the disturbance in the logs...

No, I am so much in tune with my machine that I don't need monitors - it's very easy to feel fluctuations in available processing power on old hardware. ;)

Besides, monitors take up valuable screen real estate, I prefer to use it actively for applications.

l know whats on my system and how it behaves.
It doesn't need any monitoring beyond a look at sensors from time to time to make sure the moving parts are still moving.

There is a plugin for gkrellm which adds the top three processes to your gkrellm.

Hmm, lots of monitoring. I tail -f the vital logs on each computer on my network (security, messages, auth, httpd-access, etc), usually have an instance of top running and visible. gkrellm for each *nix box on the network. weekly email reports about each system. I guess I consider myself "wired".

I voted for the last option cause of something that happened today.
I woke up, went for a run, did the usual waking up stuff, then noticed a slight difference in the noise my computer was mkaing. I do mean SLIGHT, so much so that most wouldn't realise it, and if they did they'd accept it.

Not me, I turned opened the box and listened, elimiated the front and rear fans, the cpu fan it wasnt either, not the powersupply. evently I pulled out my videocard and it stops! the fricken videocard fan was doing a mild (and I do mean mild) grinding sound. Some WD-40 all is well.

Sad, but true

If the system is running properly, I have no need to use monitors.

I just use gnome-applets for monitoring cpu, mem, and net.
I don't need any more.

I monitor my CPU using a gnome-applet. i use free -m to check my memory and df to check disk usage from time to time. i dont need to know the real-time status of everything.

I only have a P4 3.2 GHz wiith HT, I don't have the resources to spare, idle time is only between 99.7 and 100% when it's idle 101% or above I might consider running top or another monitor needlessly

Heh, if my +12v line starts to fluctuate then I notice. Gotta keep an eye on those fan speeds as well...

My prompt shows me CPU usage, MEM usage and disc usage of the device on which my pwd is on. And of course top from time to time if I need some more detailed info.

Never cared about network stats - I do not need an app to tell me if I lag :D
