quick background, i have installed gentoo successfully serveral times. i did something real stupid and figured a fresh install wouldn't kill me rather than buring the ISO i have usually installed via the alternative grub-->tftp /kernel and initrd method. it's worked in the past on this machine.
this time i was able to boot, my kernel modules for the disk and ethernet devices are loaded properly. i setup my ethernet device and i can even ssh to another machine (yea! i am trying to mount my previous partitions and chroot etc. but that's not working. a:
$ ld /dev/ | grep sd*
returns nothing...and obviously
$fdisk /dev/sda
does not work either. can't find a MAKEDEV or anything....
any suggestions/ideas?
cheers!! _________________ history is a dream i am try to awake from |

Are you sure that SCSI support, SCSI disk support, and support for the host adapter is in the kernel? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

hey thanks for replying! so yea i'm able to get SCSI controller support. the kernel even loads the modules (aic7xxx & scsi_mod are loaded). altho the aic7xxx module is reported as unused which makes sense is suppose. wierd eh
cheers!

How about SCSI disk support (I always compile it into the kernel, but I think it's sd_mod)? And devfs? You can see if it's enabled by looking for it in /proc/filesystems. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

i *believe* SCSI disk support is included with the kernel. a #dmesg not only reports my correct SCISI card but my disks are recognized as well. /proc/filesystems looks like this:
>nodev rootfs
>nodev pipefs
> ext2
> ext3
> xfs
...well those are the interesting lines atleast. all my partitions excpet /home were formatted with XFS. does this help at all
again let me remind you that i had gentoo working on this box when i screwed up my /etc directory. i am using the same method to re-install. that's why i'm confused that my disks are not being created. _________________ history is a dream i am try to awake from |

If there's no "nodev devfs" line in /proc/filesystems, you're missing devfs support. https://forums.gentoo.org/faq.php#9 contains explicit instructions for enabling it. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

shoot. sorry i left that line out. it is there. i think i'm getting to the point of putting slack on this box until i can access a cdrom burner. that is unless you know of a way to do a similar network install with the 1.4rc1 version. http://gentoo.org/doc/altinstall.html is the doc i've been using to do it via a tftp boot process. do you know if it's possible to do this with the 1.4rc1 iso images. i could not find a file similar to gentoo-ix86-1.2.iso for 1.4. i looked around livecd-basic-1.4_rc1-r2.iso but could not find a "kernel" or initrd file there.
cheers! for all your help upto this point!
