I am about to try Gentoo for the first time, but I am not new to *nix. Old habbits die hard and I have always been in the habbit of having separate file systems for root, boot, var, usr, home, and tmp. Can some recomend some appropriate sizes for a typical gentoo installation.
Thanks

Hello !
For boot I think 10 Mb schould be enough for youre not planning to have more than 2-3 kernels laying around.
/root are you planning to use root a lot ? 100 Mb should be ok
/usr must be quite large because all the sources are stored
in /usr/portage/distfiles but they can be deleted randomly if you dont mind downloading them again.
Same as above for /var because all the comiling goes to /var/tmp/portage
fo examle mozilla i experienced 2gig is not enough |

Thanks for the input. I can see I need to make adjustments to my typical RH file system sizes.
My typical layout is
/ 500mb
/boot 50mb
/usr 6gb
/var 500mb
/tmp 250mb
/home 8gb
swap (2xphysical)
/opt (whatever is left)
I see I can drop root, but I need to boost var. I am planning on using this as a workstation (KDE) / development box. How large should I go with usr and var? I surmise 6gb might be big enough for usr, but I might go up to 8gb. But what about var? 4gb, 8gb ???
Thanks,
John |

I set up var with 1 gig and have experienced no problems -- including mozilla. (previously tried 500mb which needed to be adjusted after getting to, iirc, xfree)
I also set up /usr/portage on it's own partition. Primarily because I had just experienced a file system corruption problem while using xfs and wanted to seperate things a little more. (now using reiserfs)
More partitions == more hassle setting things up, but adds a security layer that makes me feel much more comfortable.
I have: (used space): partition size : partition
(13 %) 500 mb /
(10 %) 100 mb /boot
(13 %) 1gb /var
(13 %) 1gb /opt
(29 %) 5gb /usr
(18 %) 5gb /usr/portage
(12 %) 5gb /home |

Your "old habbits" are fine, and the size of /var shouldn't be a concern, since Gentoo enables you to move the portage build structrure to for example /usr/local/src/portage. Just a setting in /etc/make.conf. _________________ Wilbert van Bakel

I have done it like this:
/: 2GB
/home: 40GB
/usr: 40GB
/var: 4GB
/tmp -> /var/tmp
/opt -> /usr/opt
oh yes, an a small /boot
so I need just 5 partitions and I have seperate userdata, program files and configs |

How big a disk (or disks) are people using? That last post scared me that my system may be inadequate. I am using a 15GB Maxtor drive for Windows and another 15GB drive for Gentoo. Is this enough?
Here is my tree:
/boot 100MB
/ 2GB
/swap 2GB
/usr 2.9GB
/var 4.7GB
/home 3.6GB |

I'm running Gentoo on 7 GB.
/ 4GB ( and that's really more than enough ... )
/home 3GB ( and I'm using only a really small part of it )
+ a very small swap.
No more partitions than that for Gentoo. ( I didn't feel the need for a separate boot.)
I'm not using Gentoo as my main OS (yet), my box is more a windows box with a gentoo on it. (shame on me, but I'm too much of a gamer.). And I've got a FAT32 partition to put all the MP3's on.
15 GB total should be more than enough. |

heh I use an 80gb hard drive but I dual boot with windows for games =/
I also have a lot of DVD rips for movies / tv shows. Some DVD rips for movies are over a gig each and games are even bigger. |
