Has anyone else noticed that the gentoo web pages don't display correctly in galeon? Sometimes they display ok, and sometimes they appear all garbled. Then if I reload the page, sometimes it clears up. It usually shows up as random characters in mixed bold and italic and some of it with strikeouts. It's very weird.
Here's a copy of www.gentoo.org/doc/build.html that shows this:
If you want to start from a stage1 tarball, then you're already set to go; you can find the stage1 tarball in /cdroot/nocompress. On the other hand, if you would prefer to start from a stage2 or stage3 tarball that has >vtn a bifrtition< td>/hda2 rock-1f't consi>unOll in

Anyone know what's going on? |

I've been using Galeon since April or so. Don't think I've ever noticed this. Currently using Galeon 1.2.5-r1 _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

I have seen this fairly consistently with Mozilla 1.0 and 1.1 under Gentoo. It happens to me often enough that I tend to use links to read the gentoo.org docs. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

One other thing that might be relevant is that I'm using a junkbuster proxy. I'll try putting gentoo.org in the "no proxy" override section and see if that improves matters. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

never saw that from mozilla 0.9.9 to mozilla 1.2a ...
you might want to check your charset settings. |

If it was a charset problem, wouldn't it be consistent? It's not consistent for me, at least. It's almost as if gentoo.org was using gzip compression and up until a certain part of the page comes in fine, and then the rest doesn't get unzipped. The point in the page where it starts to display bizarre characters is not reproducible. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

ah, true. www.gentoo.org does uses gzip compression, so that might be it. maybe one should test with different HTTP networking options (mozilla allows sites, dunno for galeon...) |

The junk I see on my screen really looks like gzipped contents. Can someone explain to my how and why the site uses gzip compression? |

gzip compression is a feature of http 1.1, it's used on a lot of sites and can make a huge difference in bandwidth the site uses.
In Mozilla try using http 1.0 and see if that fixes it.

Something to try:
Now enter the following:
Did it come up with a gzipped compressed page?
If for some reason you don't see the contents, you may be behind some sort of cache which sends you the gzipped content, even though your browser hasn't even asked for it. The ISP I'm on (blueyonder) uses transparent caches which will happily cache the gzipped content, then send it to browsers not wanted gzipped content later on. HTTP headers show:
Code: | Via: 1.1 cache-wit (NetCache NetApp/5.1R2D14) |
Obviously a transparent cache which doesn't check gzipped pages. |

Turning off keepalive fixes this for me. _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |
