After installing Gentoo, attempting to boot to it produces:
[kernel is found and loads fine]
pivot_root (/sysroot, /sysroot/initrd) failed: 2
umount /initrd/proc failed: 2
kernel panic: no init found
What kinds of things could cause this? |

I'm not sure, but it sounds to me like you have set up the kernel to boot with a ramdisk image. I suspect that the installation of it is missing something.
I suggest that you drop the initrd stuff and just boot the kernel straight as described in the installation guide.
Else, I suggest that you google for more information on this issue.
I don't use initrd, see no value in it really.
Sorry if I couldn't be of more help, maybe somebody else here have more (and better) experience than me with initrd.
