Hi, I know this has probably been answered a million times before but I cant seem to find the answer. Anyways, I tried using CFLAGS="-march=athlon-xp -O2 -msse2 -pipe" on a 32-bit install and it appeared to b0rk some of the gnome modules (they wouldnt load and GNOME got pissed at me) and mozilla wouldnt build... Is this known, or am I supposed to do something when I change CFLAGS, like recompile GLIBC? Also, my CFLAGS were "-march=i686 -O2 -pipe". So obviously if I could use those first listed CFLAGS I would notice a pretty big speed increase in compile time. :) Also, Im not sure this is documented well anywhere, but what Handbook should I follow when I am doing a 32-bit install with a amd64 cpu? I followed the x86, and it had no mention on what CFLAGS to use for a k8 processor. :-/ I dont think the CHROOT CFLAGS would be applicable in this situation, but if they are then my CFLAGS should have worked without a problem as they mention using "-O2 -march=athlon-xp -msse2 -pipe -fomit-frame-pointer".

Also, I think this is the right forum.. if not sorry.

I had those flags working fine when I was still using the x86 install, but I switched to 64 bit a few months ago and have been happy with it since.

I was using firefox but was not using gnome (kde instead).

So I don't think CFLAGs are the cause of your problem.

agreed. these CFLAGS look safe.
if you have gcc-3.4 you can set -march=k8 (even on 32bit system).
also, i don't think you have to recompile glibc after changing CFLAGS...

I don't think so either, but if you are bored and can't think of anything else just try recompiling glibc and the kernel.. if it works then that's new information :P
