Hi all,
Simple question: which driver do I use to get 2D support for this card in X? I'm using Xfree86 4.2, which I read supports my card, just not sure which driver actually supports it.
Thanks in advance... |

Hi!
2D support for the 8500 is implemented in the radeon module |

I just reinstall from scratch Gentoo 1.4 RC1, and I was able to use the firegl drivers to have 3d working under XFree for my Radeon 8500.
I now play RTCW under linux, it rocks! |

Have you done anything special while installing the firegl drivers?
Trying it under Suse I get 2500fps with glxgears
With Gentoo only 80fps (!!!!)
Something bites.... |

Well, I tried for a while before, and it never worked.
Then, when I reinstall my system from scratch with 1.4RC1, I wanted to give it another try.
And it worked right away, just doing the normal install. There is a thread talking about it, do a search, you will see it.
I have more than 2000fps with glxgears. |

thanks Phelan - next question: where do i find the radeon module? at this stage i'm looking thru the driver DB in xf86config, but cant see it. is there another way of specifying it?
(btw, X seems happy just to take the ATI driver for Mach's etc...) |

It's a kernel module.
When you will choose your modules when you recompile your kernel, you will have a DRM 4.1 drivers section in Character devices.
There, you pic the one called ATI Radeon. |

Yes, it's missing in the database. Just pick any driver in xf86config and change the following line in your /etc/X11/XF86Config, section "Device":
Code: | Driver "theoneyouhavechosen" |
to
Depending on the driver you first have chosen, the config application might have added some unwanted options to the same section. In my config there is only one option-line:
You may want to remove the other lines in the Device section beginning with "Option" as they may bite with your card.
BTW: The DPMS Option enables the Powersave modes for your monitor so its generally a good thing to have it in the config as long your monitor does support it. (Nowadays it's pretty hard to find one that doesn't) |
