I'm following the instructions for CUPS based on the Gentoo printing howto. It provides a link (here: http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/foomatic/) for the foomatic configuration scripts.

My questions:

1) Which foomatic file do I download?

2) Where do I download it to?

3) What do I do with it after I download it so I can move on to the next step in the howto?

(Sorry, this is a REAL NEWBIE question, but I have never done anything with a tarball before).

Thank you in advance for your help.

I downloaded http://www.linuxprinting.org/download/foomatic/foomatic-2.0-current.tar.gz

Works for me.

Just download it to your homedir.
Untar it like this:
Code:

cd ~
tar xvzf ~/foomatic*.tar.gz

Then cd in the newly created directory and read the INSTALL file.
Code:

less INSTALL

Actually, the file to read of interest was "USAGE"

Basically,

./configure
make
make install

(after your instructions, actually).

Now on to the rest of printer configuration!

Thanks!!!

(and I won't be so scared of tarballs next time!!!) :D
