Not sure if this is the right area to be posting in, so apologies if not.

I have a digital projector that I want to attach to my machine. How should I be setting up X to handle a projector rather than a monitor? Is it good enough to just plug in the projector and say, "Projector, GO!!"?

I'm hoping so, but guessing not.

Thanks

I'm guessing that this would depend on the kind of projector you want to use. Generally, methinks your best bet is to get a video card with DVI, and a projector with DVI... but it should work with normal analog cables and no special configuration. If there are offset or sizing problems, try xvidtune.

Unfortunately getting a video card with DVI isn't really an option :( We're essentially stuck with the standard VGA connector.

I'm going to remember the xvidtune suggestion though.

Do you think that there could be refresh rate and resolution problems between X and the projector?

Well, DPMI checks the monitor for the refresh rate. If your card or projector doesn't support DPMI, try setting it to something reasonable (60hz?), or check the projector's manual.

Seems that there was nothing to worry about. The projector worked just fine, although gnome seemed rather washed out. However, we were doing a video presentation, and xine seemed to play the videos at with the correct colours, or close enough that no one could tell the difference.
