When I boot my G4 400 Yikes with the gentoo 1.2 ppc -r1 install cd it works fine, up till I get to unpacking the tarball, any stage, even the one's on gerk's site.
At this stage, I get an error from tar anywhere from the third thing being unpacked to gcc. It tells me that it has reached unexpected EOF and that I should try repairing the bzip2 file using bzip2recover (not sure of exact name, I am in class now and will check later today). The error happens in different places each time I try to unpack the tarball.

Is this my fault? or the Gentoo cd's fault?

The only thing I can think of is that I may have a ram module not seated properly. Any ideas?

Thanks!
-Andrew

ps: does a g4 Yikes have any trouble booting gentoo without a video card?

Well, I reseated my ram. And it didn't help, the error I get is:
Code:

./usr/lib/gcc-lib/powerpc-unknown-gnu/2.95.3/libgcc.a

bzip2: Data integrity error when decompressing.
Input file = (stdin), output file = (stdout)

It is possible that the compressed file(s) have become corrupted.
You can use the -tvv option to test integrity of such files.

You can use the 'bzip2recover' program to attempt to recover data from undamaged sections of corrupted files.

tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Unexpected EOF in archive
tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now

the only reason that libgcc is there is cause that is the file it stopped on this time.

Any help?

Thanks,
Andrew

fixed.
Used the iso from gerk's website, the new iso 1.4. That worked for unzipping the tarball.

It must be that tar / bzip2 is corrupted /old on the 1.2 cd.
Maybe someone can verify this?

Maybe the cd became corrupted during download. Did you check it with MD5 before burning?

Yes a corrupted ISO would be my best guess as no one else has had these problems with the 1.2-r1 iso. There are a few things you should know abot that ISO from my site as well... it's very very beta (alpha even)... please don't redist it, but glad it worked for you :)

Well it worked more than the 1.2-r1 iso's did, but it failed in bootstrapping the stage one tarball.
It would still give me the tar error when unzipping the stage 2 and 3 tarballs.

I will try to download and burn another copy of a 1.2 iso today and try it again.
It is wierd, I have never had this much trouble with iso's before.

I will let you know if I get it working or not.

I noticed that it is a very beta beta iso, the cd's /dev was filled with lots of stuff, and devfs wasn't working properly, and dhcpcd wasn't even on the cd. but it is functional.

Thanks,
Andrew

Well. I downloaded the 1.2 r1 cd again, via wget. Checked it with md5. It matched. and burned the cd from command line with cdrecord.

I still get the tar error when trying to untar the stage1-1.4 tarball.

However, when untarring the 1.2 tarball it works. And I get up to the bootstrap process. Then I get texinfo-4.2 giving an "internal compiler error: program cc1 got fatal signal 4". I think this is a texinfo problem not a gentoo iso problem, cause it happened with the very alpha cd as well, in the same spot.

If I try to untar the stage2 or 3 for gentoo 1.2, I get the tar error again.
:-(

I really want to use gentoo on my ppc, I have it on my laptop, my desktop and on another x86 server, and my friend's laptop no problem, but the ppc version just doesn't want to play nice with my G4.

Any ideas?

Thanks

OK, this is really wierd.
From my last post, I couldn't get the 1.4 tarballs to work, but the 1.2 did work.
So I rebooted, same cd, same computer, and then the 1.2 tarball wouldn't work but the 1.4 did.

No matter which one works, I still wind up getting an error when doing bootstrap at texinfo-4.2. Is there anyway I can use an older version of texinfo? and still have my gentoo work?

Thanks,
Andrew

I switched the positions of my two ram chips so that the 128meg is in the first slot and the 64meg is in the second, and I can now untar the 1.4 tarball and I get past texinfo, I have a bad ram chip.

Crucial.com here I come, via the Gentoo link on the homepage that is.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I found out it was the 128megger, cause I got a kernel panic in the middle of compilation when it was the only chip in my mobo.
good thing pc100 is dirt cheap ;)
