I'd recommend Nvidia. The Ati drivers are the main reason for that :(

In comparison is it worth the money going for a 5950 over a 5900? I am currently running a 4200 TI

You don't recommend the 9600XT? It seems like a very fast card for the money. That's the card I've been looking at, but I'm currently running an older GeForce. How difficult is it get the 9600XT working with Gentoo?

The 9600XT has been out for a while. It's below $200 on newegg.com. My past couple of cards have been NVIDIA, so I'm wondering about switching.

I've been using ati cards since the radeon 64dd, and I've never regretted it. Now, I have the 9600XT chipset on a sapphire card running Gentoo like a crazy little monkey. A crazy little monkey on crack!

Just a quick notice:

If you don't run games, do complex video-editing, ray-tracing etc,, the card really don't matter.

If you, like most, do none of these things, whatever card suits your finacial situation will be fine.

It was a pain in the ass getting any sort of performance (which was around 50% of what I got in Win2K) with an ATI card. However, my nVidia GeForceFX 5600 256MB Edition works around 30% faster in Linux than in Windows with 2.6.x.

I recommend nVidia for Linux, as the driver support is excellent.
