OK, one of my professors came up to me and asked me to get the root password off on of the blades we have set up at our college. Unfortuately the person who knew the password, has graduated, and I have no clue for contact information. I dont know much about silo or sparcs. So I was wondering how can I get dropped to a single user prompt like with grub when you specify init=/bin/bash.

I have tried:

Code:

ok boot single
boot single
linux single
linux root=/dev/sda2 init=/bin/bash
gentoo single
gentoo root=/dev/sda2 init=/bin/bash

Sorry that I am posting such a stupid question but have searched the internet and cant find anything that doesnt revolve around ok boot single. Thanks for your time.

All you should need to do is boot into the silo prompt. Hit <tab> to see available kernels, then type 'kernname init=/bin/bash'. This should drop you into a root shell where you can run passwd or edit the shadow file. If you're still having problems for whatever reason, you can also boot from a livecd, mount the root partition, chroot into it and run the passwd command.
