No problems here. Reiser4 on /, /home, and /usr/portage.

Reiser4 + v30e = perfection in a kernel. ;)

@yngwin and thebell

Did you use largekeys with Reiser4? I don't understand, why I am having such troubles. :(

Yep. Large keys are on, since it's the default and I can't be bothered to change it.

Any ideas?

Also, bootsplash works on shutdown, but on startup it has the normal black framebuffer and then switches to the custom framebuffer at the end of boot. Is there something I need to do to get it working normally again?

Thanks

With regard to the ATi drivers, have a look here and here. The first thread has a link to some ebuilds that I whipped up quickly that automatically apply the relevant patches but they're only for the 3.7.6 drivers, if you use 3.2.8 then you'll have to modify the 3.2.8 ebuild accordingly but its fairly simple.

As for bootsplash, I got the same issue you describe when I had Register Arguments enabled. As this also breaks the ATi drivers it's probably best to go into the Processor Type and Features menu and make sure its disabled (-love reverses the patch that makes it permanent so it should still be there).

Just to go sure, are you talking about the option "MTRR (Memory Type Range Register) support"?
I thought this would be a necessity for bootsplash, as this is stated in the Bootsplash-Howto here in the forum.

No, there's an option in the kernel config under "Processor type and features" labeled "Use register arguments (EXPERIMENTAL)". That's the one needs to be disabled, MTRR has no bearing on the problem.

It runs perfectly! Respect. But I'm very curious what v30e is?

Yes, and just that, none of the other options in kernelconfig.

Three pages and nobody mentions the Dune reference?

Sheesh, you people should have your geek licenses revoked :P

[edit] I'm thinking about installing it when I get home later, but what big things are missing from this kernel by dropping -mm?

Some of us are too lazy to read Dune. Probably when I get into my 50's. No wait, that's when I'm supposed to get interested in the Civil War. 8)

It was too obvious to actually mention anything

Yippie! I am finally running a pure reiser4 system (after like three weeks of bootstrapping) and now this! Thanks for all the hard work! We _really_ appreciate it!

@yngwin and thebell and other reiser4 users:

I found the problem maker: It is a certain directory in portage (I just tried portage on reiser4). The moment I copy it ovver to the reiser4 diesk and do a sync, it justs hangs. It seems to be the order which causes the troubles, as when I manually copied the files, it worked. I tared the dir up and untaring gives the same problem, so anyone dare to test this? Best would be if you have a virgin reiser4 partiton and unatr my archive and then type sync. It it hangs, we have a more or less easy reproducible bug. Unfortunately the tar is 1.2 mb big. If you want to test, please send me an email to pra kas hkc@ gm x.de (without spaces, obviously). I will then send the archive to you. Then if the same problem occurs, I will tell the reiser people.

Perhaps one could recreate the proble if one copies over data in this order:

Code:

drwxr-xr-x root/root         0 2004-04-26 19:42:12 portage.o/
-rw-r--r-- root/root       877 2004-04-26 19:42:12 portage.o/Manifest
drwxr-xr-x root/root         0 2004-05-17 18:37:29 portage.o/files/

-rw-r--r-- root/root    284986 2003-09-16 14:53:12 portage.o/files/portage-rescue-2.0.49-r3-alpha.tbz2

-rw-r--r-- root/root    168027 2002-11-13 01:26:08 portage.o/files/portage-rescue-2.0.44-ppc.tbz2

-rw-r--r-- root/root    289608 2003-11-16 06:05:38 portage.o/files/portage-rescue-2.0.49-r15-amd64.tbz2
-rw-r--r-- root/root     10868 2004-04-26 19:42:12 portage.o/portage-2.0.50-r6.ebuild
-rw-r--r-- root/root     13299 2004-04-26 19:24:41 portage.o/portage-2.0.51_pre7.ebuild
-rw-r--r-- root/root       581 2004-04-26 19:42:12 portage.o/ChangeLog
-rw-r--r-- root/root       165 2003-12-06 08:43:30 portage.o/metadata.xml

It is the portage/sys-apps/portage folder. Just doing a cp -rp /usr/portage/sys-apps/portage probably won't help as the data my be saved in a different order on your hd.

I'd be willing to test it, but the only email account i have at the moment is Hotmail, and it's got a 1MB limit on attachments. If you've got some webspace you could upload it to, I'll try it out.

I'm also getting this error. Nvidia drivers 4496. It worked perfectly fine with 2.6.6-love2.

same here: nvidia-kernel 4496 reports an 'invalid module format'
Following misc advices in this thread, I:
1. emerged nvidia-kernel .. 5336
2. emerged nvidia-glx .. 5336
3. added 'nvidia' in /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.6

X seems to work now, but I do not see more the nvidia splash screen.

Is it safe to upgrade the nvidia modules of my older kernels?

Unfortunately I haven't got webspace. Could OneofOne or steel300 upload the archieve to their webspace? Then I would send either of you the file.

Linux Kenny 2.6.6-love4 #4 SMP Mon May 17 15:20:57 UTC 2004 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Finally Reiser4, however is there any reason why this kernel would not work with qingy? Everything works fine booting up, I can even get qingy to load, but when I log in it just seems to restart qingy even if I chose to log into the console. I am able to start gnome through gdm but not qingy :(

I'm having a similar qingy-related problem with snekiepete. Had to switch to kdm :(

Anyways, 2.6.6-love4 seems to be a hurricane! Thanks a lot!

Regarding the problem with nvidia-kernel 4496.

Apply this patch: http://w1.864.comhem.se/~u86426690/patches/reverse_move_to_modpost_2.6.6-love4.patch.bz2
It reverses the move-__this_module-to-modpost.patch.

Rebuild your kernel and emerge nvidia-kernel 4496-r3 and it should work, at least it does for me.

Excuse my ignorance, but this whole kernel patching thing is new to me. I sucessfully emerged love-sources, configured, and compiled the kernel. Everything is seemingly working A-OK. But I'm wondering about the scheduler, I read in earlier posts in this thread about elevator="cfq". Do I need to add this option to use a different scheduler? Am I using a different scheduler just by emerging the love-sources? Any clarification is appreciated.

:edit: plain and simple i'm trying to find out what scheduler i am using.

I didn't drop mm. I got reiser4 and mm to play nicely.
