What do I miss out on by not using DRM? I mean, I don't do any gaming or anything like that ... I guess I'm kinda fuzzy on what it does, since my desktop uses an Nvidia driver and I don't have to do this drm stuff =)

You'll probably want to check out this page for the authoritative answers to drm stuff. As I understand it, drm just allows for a module to access the dri interface and have 3d-acceleration. Of course you can always test if you have direct rendering by doing:

Code:
glxinfo | grep rendering
direct rendering: Yes

the next love won't be out until the new reiser4 snapshot is out, i'm working on a release of evil-sources based on love4 but using mm4, the only patches added are nfsacl and reversing move-__this-module-to-modpost, because bestcrypt and svgalib are broken using that.

I mistakenly partitioned hda1 to reiser4 using the mkfs.reiser4 command. I dual boot and hda1 is my windows partition. Any chance on getting this back or am I screwed?

If I'm not screwed how would I go about do this?

Yes, recover with your backup ...

Sorry , but i don't think you can.
Reformat and reinstall... or never think abour Winsucks anymore and enjoy your new and fast reiser4 partition.

bye

Unfortunatly my back up is a couple weeks old. The only thing I would like to pull is pictures from my dig cam that I have recently added (and have since erased from my flash memory).

I primarily use gentoo however my wife is slower to convert, hence the dual boot.

Would any partition recovery software work?

I am going to give testdisk 5.2 a try. I've had some sucess in the past with this.

Any other disk utilities to pull raw data off of partitions? I've bounced into this from time to time. Any program for gentoo that can do this?

I'll keep this short because you should not even be posting "other system" help requests here :!: "lost and found"

Solution B tell you wife there's no way to reformat a reiser4 partition back to .... another system and reformat her to reiser4 as well. !

I'll keep this short...

It is possible because I just did it. I recovered an NTFS file system (or should I call it "other operating system fs") after I partioned it reiser4. I have access to all the data and I might even be able to fully recover it to boot from it.

What is with the pompous attitude? If anyone is curious of the fix contact me, I would want to waste anyone else's time posting on the seemingly "wrong" forum.

I am actually not surprised that you r data could be recovered. The mkfs.reiser4 is soo fast that it is no real format. SO unless it touches something critical in ntfs, it could be undoen, and as you have shwon it was possible. Be happy. :)

I jump in the same boot as you guys, steel300 help us out of this one. I tried to follow https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=170548 forum link, but no go. I think I'm just too stupid to get it done.

thanks and regards,

Oops was I rude?

There's nothing pompous about it , this is a gentoo kernel forum . You could post to Gentoo "Off the wall " with a pb like that or on a windows support forum.

"Lost and Found" is a good recovery tool for the sort of un-backed up mess you got yourself into.

I thought it may help. Sorry .

who said format?

mkfs : make file system

So I guess an empty file system is just a very short table. (luckily for some!)

Ok. Perhaps I got a little snippy. Thanks for your help people.

I used testdisk 5.2 which is great partition recovery software. You can find it here...

@Steel: i see that love 5 is out.

Is this with this nforce 2 disconnect patch or must i patch the kernel by myself?

My nforce 2 board always freezes and i couldn't apply this patch by myself yet, i got some error messages. Now i hope the new love is better for my board.

Damn, i think i must wait until you answer, here my first try to compile the new kernel:

fs/ext3/balloc.c: In function `ext3_should_retry_alloc':
fs/ext3/balloc.c:1001: error: structure has no member named `journal_info'
make[2]: *** [fs/ext3/balloc.o] Fehler 1
make[1]: *** [fs/ext3] Fehler 2
make: *** [fs] Fehler 2

the nforce issue has been resolved in kernels above 2.6.5... just add acpi_skip_timer_override to your kernel options in grub or lilo...

and that error is probably why it hasn't been released officially...

[Should we open a new thread? (we have still 2.6.6-love3)]

Compiling 2.6.6-love5 terminates on the following error:

[fs/ext3/balloc.o] Error 1

CHK include/linux/compile.h
CC fs/ext3/balloc.o
fs/ext3/balloc.c: In function << ext3_should_retry_alloc >>:
fs/ext3/balloc.c:1001: error: structure has no member named `journal_info'

Same results here :-(
Guess it's still under development then...

2.6.6-love5 works fine here :)

you need http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/people/akpm/patches/2.6/2.6.6/2.6.6-mm4/2.6.6-mm4.bz2
and
http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jpcox/2.6.6-love5.bz2

bootsplash works too.
