I've noticed a few other packages are not the newest avalible. xsane is a sample.

Is there a how-to or page somewhere that describes the process to go through to get a new or updated ebuild into the portage tree?

I really like Gentoo and would like to thank al teh developers at Gentoo of their great work...... If I could help I'm only too eager to.

Regards
Tim

If you create the ebuild, stick it in bugzilla tagged as an enhancement on the ebuilds project. The developers are very attentive and friendly, and provided they don't already have a new build in the works, will probably include it ( provided it's not openly Broken ).

They will even say nice things to you that will give you the warm fuzzies! Just make sure to search first to make sure nobody else is already on the case.

What if I just alter an existing ebuild and submit that? Do I need to test it somehow or do the developers do that?

I imagine they will, but it would be courteous to check it a few times yourself. ;-)

There really isn't any other way to test to see if it works or not, now is there?
LOL

Once you have the ebuild in place, just do "ebuild (ebuild name) digest" "ebuild (ebuild name) fetch" "ebuild (ebuild name) compile" "ebuild (ebuild name) install" and that should tell you if it works or not.

So if it goes wrong can I remove it like "emerge unmerge" as I use xsane and sylpheed myself as my main apps and if they stop I'm stuck.

check out packages.mask, as there is a package freeze for the 1.4[.rcX] release. most of the new ebuilds are here, but masked because of the freeze. feel free to give them a try if you are brave enough.
