Hallo,
ich habe das genannte Notebook mit beworbener Hyper Threading Fähigkeit erworben.
laut dmesg ist sie allerdings Disabled 
Kernel ist mit SMP Support kompiliert.
Kernel 2.6.6-rc1
Wie aktiviere ich HT im BIOS habe ich leider keine Möglichkeit gefunden.

Dann unterstützt das Board kein HT ?
Kernel auch mit Pentium 4 kompostet?
Nur so ne frage. Was sagt den /proc/cpuinfo ? |

Ich bin beim Studium der Dell Webseiten und Foren darauf gestossen
das wohl seit ein paar BIOS Versionen die Option im BIOS fehlt.
Ansonsten:
Kernel für P4
/proc/cpuinfo sagt ein Prozessor aber mit ht flag
Das Board sollte das Unterstützen, wurde mir so verkauft und steht auf Rechnung (Wieder ein Grund für eine Rechtsschutzverischerung) |

schau was du für nen chipsatz hast, daran kannstes schon erkennen, ob das board unterstützt.
bei meinem Asus board steht direkt hyperthreading als option, notfalls mal bios updaten ..

Er hat doch gesagt, dass bei DELL und in den Foren steht, dass das BIOS das "seit ein paar Versionen" (!) nicht mehr unterstützt. 
.
Aber das ist typisch für DELL! Das ist ein richtiger Sche** Laden. Ich habe selbst ein Inspiron 7500 und zwei Dell Dimension 8000.
Trotz 3 Jahre vor Ort Service (für alle Geräte) gab es immer wieder Probleme mit dem Support. Die wollten mich sogar für Dumm verkaufen. 
So war z.B. Bei den PCs zuerst, als die Baureihe noch ganz neu war, ein DVD-Laufwerk eingebaut, mit dem konnte ich meine original Adobe Framemaker 6.0 CD im Wert von 2.300 DM netto nicht lesen. Auf keinem der beiden Dimensions! Der Support sagte mir doch glatt (nach Nachfrage beim Gruppenleiter), dass das kein Dell Problem wäre. Schließlich ginge es ja nur um eine CD. Ich habe natürlich sofort einen Blutrausch bekommen. Es folgte ein heftiger Wortwechsel der von meiner Seite mit der Drohung meines Anwalts endete.
Letztendlich kam ein Techniker des Subunternehmers und tauschte erst ein DVD aus. Als ich dann bestätigen konnte, dass nun alles läuft, kam der Mann nochmals und tauschte das andere aus.

Leider war es nicht das einzige Mal, dass ich mit dem Anwalt drohen musste. Abgesehen davon können die Dimension selbst mit dem neuesten BIOS nicht von DVD booten! Als ich bei der Hotline anrief, sagte der Schlaumeier, so was hätte er ja noch nie gehört, dass man von DVD booten könne. Das wäre nicht normal und es würde von Dell auch nicht unterstützt.

Soviel zum Thema Dell... Nein, noch kurz: Als ich in der Abteilung System-Engineering einer großen deutschen Bank gearbeitet habe, wollten die auch mal Dell nehmen. Es gab nur Probleme. Und irgendwann haben die, ohne es anzükündigen, einfach etwas an der Hardware geändert... und nichts lief mehr! Aber das war denen egal. Nun, das war dann das Ende für Dell und ein evtl. Auftrag über 25.000 PCs war futsch.

das hab ich jetzt noch nicht gelesen...
aber zumindest ansonsten rennt das teil sehr, sehr gut... (sogar _mit_ modem... )

Also laut der Technik Hotline werden 2.8GHz ohne Hyperthreading verkauft.
Jetzt muss ich wohl zuhause mal die Ursprüngliche Auftragsbestätigung suchen und sehen was da drin steht.

also zumindest da kann ich dir helfen:
lade dir von:
ftp://ftp.smlink.com/linux/unsupported
das packet
slmodem-2.9.6.tar.gz (oder 2.9.7...)
runter (ist sich nich' in portage... )
dann wird es komplex:
einfach 'make' baut zwar das kernel modul (slamr.ko / slusb.ko)
leider, leider kann (ich) das slamr.ko nicht modproben:

diese symbole kenne ich nicht - weiss im augenblick auch nicht, was da nicht geht...
aber:
so gehts dann doch -->> ALSA
in der kernel .config mache folgendes:
Device Drivers -> Sound -> ALSA -> PCI devices ->
[M] Intel i8x0/MX440, SiS 7012; Ali 5455; NForce Audio; AMD768/8111
[M] Intel i8x0/MX440; AMD768/8111 modems (EXPERIMENTAL)
du erhältst dann ein snd-intel8x0m
dann geh nach /usr/src/slmodem-2.9.6/modem
und mach ein
make SUPPORT_ALSA=1
das baut den slmodemd mit alsa support...
dann noch aus der Makefile die deviceinträge klauen, anlegen,
den slmodemd dann per
slmodemd --alsa hw:0 starten..
der erzeugt dir dann dynamisch dein /dev/ttyS0 oder so...
das wars...

make all
modprobe
ging dann ohne Probleme
und
slmodemd
ging auch |

soweit komme ich auch, ich kann aber nicht rauswählen, weile ich kein Freizeichen bekomme.
