I can't help, but that would probably be WM specific. I'm using Gnome2 with Sawfish and there are no 'shrinking window' animations.
IIRC metacity, which is the default, has them, and they are built-in. I don't think they can be turned off.

Ahhh, I see. How can I tell Gnome to start using a different Window Manager?

open a console
Code:
killall metacity && sawfish

replace 'metacity' with your current WM and 'sawfish' with the one you want.

This doesn't always work right, and I don't recall the 'proper' method. (gnome configuration needs to be streamlined) A forum search should up alternate methods.

Once you have the one you want running, be sure to check 'save current setup' when you logout.

So you can run ANY Window Manager on top of Gnome? I'm confused because I thought that Gnome itself was the Window Manager... is KDE this way too?

KDE uses kwin (I think) as a window manager. Don't know about changing it.
Don't know if *any* WM will work with gnome.
Still not sure about the advantages of the 'desktop environment' that gnome and KDE are.
The lines seam a bit blurry to me. And to add to my confusion, Enlightenment (another WM I like), is going to become a 'desktop shell', whatever that means.
Layers of programs. The DE takes care of some things and the WM others.
All I can suggest is searching, because I don't have it figured out either :)

There is more information about Metacity on the gnome user's forum -
you can even find out how to patch metacity to get rid of the animation.

A quick intro: Metacity is going to be the official wm for gnome 2.2 - similar to kwin in kde it will be fully integrated with the system in such a way that the user will not need to know what a wm is.

It i a great piece of software with 2 or 3 major flaws that have been discuseed at great lenght on the GUB.
