I am running XFce4. I want to:
  • Enable gDesklets.
  • Disable the panel
  • Disable the taskbar

I emerged the gdesklets-core ebuild, and I have no idea what to do next.

gdesklets-core provides the core gDesklets functionality. In order to actually use it you need to install some
Make sure you've got app-portage/gentoolkit installed. Running
Code:
qpkg -i desklet
will list all packages whose name contains the word desklet. For example:
Code:
moocha root # qpkg -i desklet
gnome-extra/gdesklets-core-0.26.1
GNOME Desktop Applets: core library for the desktop applets [ http://www.pycage.de/software_gdesklets.html ]
x11-plugins/desklet-clock-0.32-r1
The clock sensors and displays for gdesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-starterbar-0.22.1
An OSX like gnome panel for launchers [ http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-weather-0.25
A weather monitoring Sensor and Display for gdesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-cpuinfo-0.1.4-r1
A CPU Monitor Sensor and Display for gDesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-diskinfo-0.1.4-r1
        A Disk-free Monitoring Sensor and Display for gDesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-ltvariations-0.21-r1
The clock sensors and displays for gdesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-networkinfo-0.1.4-r1
A Network monitoring Sensor and Display for gDesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-cornerxmms-0.0.5-r1
A corner display that interacts with XMMS [ http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-sysinfo-0.25
        A system information providing Display/Sensor for gDesklets [ http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org ]
x11-plugins/desklet-temperature-0.2
A temperature desklet that displays the temperature as it changes over 24 hours [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-psidisplays-20040420
        A CPU Monitor Sensor for gdesklets [ http://www.pycage.de/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-psisensors-20040420
Psi's collection of popular gDesklet Sensors including CPU, Disk, Memory, Network and other Sensors [ http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-goodweather-0.4
A desklet producing weather forecasts for the coming week [ http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ]
x11-plugins/desklet-multitail-0.2.2
A desklet that allows the 'tail' or viewing of multiple files on your desktop [ http://gdesklets.gnomedesktop.org/ ]

I'm told that x11-plugins/desklet-psisensors is a good desklet collection.

Basically from /etc/xfce4/xinitrc, remove
Code:
xftaskbar4&

and change the panel line to:
Code:
panel=`which gdesklets`

and that outta work

PostPosted: Thu May 06, 2004 3:06 am    Post subject: how do I add gdesklets? Reply with quote

Thank you for the advice guys!

I started XFce without the panel and it is indead gone, but I don't have any gDesklets configured yet. I have no idea how to do this. I tried typing 'gdesklets', but I get this message:
Code:

root@NICK mystic # gdesklets
Could not connect to gnome-session. GNOME session management will not be
available for this application.
gDesklets 0.26.1
Copyright (C) 2003, 2004 Martin Grimme, Christian Meyer, Jesse Andrews

So how on earth do I "enable" a specific gDesklet besides emerging it? Thanks. :)

just make sure about xfce4-session. if u are using the session. you have to disable the taskbar by killing it. then save the session. otherwise the sfce4-session could well potentially restart the last saved session....

I'm still confiused to how I make the gDesklets show up. I havn't configured anything.

well, after emerging a specific desklet you go:

/usr/share/gdesklets/Displays/<display_dir>/

and do:

$ gdesklets <desklet_name>.display

then focus your mouse on your desktop and choose the place it looks best

go ahead and run it. this is the session manager for xfce4. it will makes things go smoother for you. also as you transistion from a *dm (xdm/gdm/kdm) to the desktop manager the session manager is called to manage things....

do the following, and it will come up for you:

Code:

emerge sync
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"  emerge /usr/portage/xfce-base/xfce4-session/xfce4-session-0.1.1.ebuild

as a side note, go ahead and also do this:

Code:

emerge gentoo-artwork

this will enable the gentoo icons for you. they will all be stored in /usr/share/icons/gentoo. then you can replace your xfce4-panel icons by the gentoo icons.

If you search the forums for the Lila theme, the Lila icon set along with gdesklets looks very nice.

I think the images he's using for gDesklets are showing up corrupted. Just taking a close look around the desklets being used, there seem to be lines running across some of the transparencies.

Thank you for the support, guys. :)

I have to be leaving soon... after I get home I will give a detailed explanation to how I exactly set it up.

To get you started, go over to /usr/share/gdesklets/Display/name of desklet/ and type gdesklets name.desklet.

I don't know what you mean by corrupted...:/

I am using XFce.

The icon set is Umicons 2.0. You can find it on DeviantART.

Do "emerge search desklet"

Emerge any desklets you want.

As a user, NOT ROOT, go to /usr/share/gdesklets/Displays/

Do a dir to see the contents of the folders and cd into the one you want to activate.

Inside that directory, type "gdeskets XXXX.display" where XXXX is the name of the display file.

I have no idea what a psi is. I am having trouble myself installing desklets without using emerge. I only know how to use displays. For example, I download a desklet and run the install script. I have no idea where it puts my files...

I also recommend using new fonts. I used Aquafont and Crillee. Try emerge search font. For the bottom icons, I used starterbar.

Someone posted another way to do this in an earlier thread. You could also run gnome, kill nautilus and run xfdesktop. Then set that as your default session. I remember having some problems running it the other way, but this has been working great for me.
