I've looked at supermount, submount, hald, dbus, ivman -

I'm still having problems automounting cdroms and usb sticks...

Why is this such a problem with Gentoo...

FC3 and Ubuntu both have this feature in a fairly standard install - I wouldn't think it would be this complicated in Gentoo...

My main problem is that once it's mounted, and I look at it, I can't unmount it - it continually says the device is busy...

Any advice / help?

- Chris

You didn't mention which of the various methods you are using now. Ubuntu is using the hal, dbus.gvm method. hal, dbus,{gvm, ivman} is working nicely here. I used supermount in the past without problems, but it's gone from the kernel now and was, apparently, an ugly hack to begin with.

Sorry to have missed that -

I'm currently trying to use ivman...

I setup udev, installed hal and dbus (and rc-updated the modules as default), and installed ivman -

and it works fine from a "i put the cd in and it recognizes it"... but I can't unmount/eject that cd once it's read...

I'd also like the ability to automaticaly have an icon appear on the desktop for access (per FC3 and Ubuntu)

The wiki's and howto's are ok about installing it, but they say things like "edit the config files" - the problem is there are 4 - what do I edit and what do I change...

I think the guide authors assume the user has more knowledge than I do in regards to setting up linux...

Sorry to be useless, but I don't have any experiance with ivman. g-v-m worked for me out of the box. What are you using for a window manager or desktop environment?
