What do you mean with this ?? What is hal ??

As Nate_S said, HAL stands for Hardware Abstraction Layer. As for what it is, try the following:

(1) Emerge gentoolkit-dev, and use gensync to get the BreakMyGentoo overlay. (gensync bmg-main should do it).
(2) Emerge gnome-volume-manager-cvs. This will pull in DBUS and HAL as dependencies.
(3) Start the messagebus and hald services.
(4) Run gnome-volume-properties, and check the box that says "Mount removable media when inserted".
(5) Insert a CD.

Working here...

Thanks for the info but I dont use gnome here and I dont feel like installing it just for one prog (something like 50 dependencies). Is there something similiar for KDE ?

CFQ is in mainline now. The version we used to include was CFQ + more hacks that no one actually used. We dropped that in favor of -mm's CFQ (thus reviving AS), and that CFQ has gone mainline.

Do you mean the one from ck-sources?
http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/2.6/2.6.4/2.6.4-ck2/split/patch-2.6.4.iso-cfqionice.bz2

If I recall correctly, it is exactly the same as the mainline -cfq but also has io-priority support, i.e. it takes processes' nice levels into account when queueing them.

Precisely. When we talked about it in love-sources, most had no idea about it the extra feature. ;) And as it took the process's nice level into account, we figured it only really helped cases where people were renicing like mad, which seemed rare. xfree doesn't do much disk I/O.

thubble wrote:
In order for it to work properly you also need this patch:
http://ck.kolivas.org/patches/2.6/2.6.4/2.6.4-ck2/split/patch-2.6.4.cfqionice-schedioprio.bz2
But you need to remove the 2 if statements which refer to batch and iso scheduling.

But it also broke AS, which is why we dropped it.

thubble wrote:
The performance difference is quite noticeable with these patches under a heavy load. For instance, with X reniced to -15, I can have an emerge world and kernel compile running in background consoles with no noticeable slowdown in X. I've been manually adding these to each love release, but is there any chance of getting them included in the patch?

So the CFQ + I/O nice has significant gains over CFQ? Just renicing X doesn't seem like it should affect the disk priorities of other processes but I could be wrong.

submount works too much better than supermount !!

Great! A new love release, to bad that it's not patched with Win4Lin. :( So I guess I have to stay with 2.6.6-rc2-love2 until there's another love-release with Win4Lin support.

(I need Win4Lin for school :()

i'll try to include it in next release.
PickledOnion, you can use this as a base of course but why not use submount or HAL?
Zer0: i dropped it by mistake, it's coming back next release.
ck's version of cfq4 broke AS, i'd like if i can include it but alot of people still use/like AS.
peace

setting up something in /etc/gensync now.......you better keep this updated dude, im depending on ya :wink:

EDIT: works, for anyone interested, emerge gentoolkit-dev, then make this in /etc/gensync/love-sources.syncsource :

Code:

# This id must be unique among all the ids in /etc/gensync/*.syncsource
id="love-sources"

# This is a human-readable description of the source
description="Unoffical Love Sources Rsync"

# The rsync url
rsync="rsync://rsync.andrewnelson.org/loveebuilds"

# By default, the overlay directory is set to ${base_overlay}/${id},
# where base_overlay is picked from /etc/gensync/gensync.conf
#
# You may specify a different relative path, such as
overlay="/usr/local/portage"

I don't use supermount or submount, I find clicking a simple button just as effective to mount/unmount whatever media I am using (cd/dvd/usb, etc), no, for me the main thing is win4lin, I need it for my work at University and I find vmware too much of a hassle to use effectively (printing, browsing my file structure, etc).

I think love-sources are great and genuinely thank you for your effort. Now I have gone forward a bit in my knowledge I love tinkering with the kernel and far from having an onion-sources (LOL), I actually like patching my own kernel and learning the hard way. When that fails, and it usually does, it is nice to have a cutting edge kernel to fall back to, like love-sources. Make sense?

Not yet, AFAIK. Though from a brief look at the source, it doesn't look too hard to port it to KDE. Most of the code simply talks to HAL, and the GNOME dependencies seem to be mostly for the properties applet and GConf.

Nobody answered to my post. Maybe I'm looking for love in the wrong place :wink:

I found the config_hz patch and will patch it myself. I think that dxr3/h+ is not getting patched properly. It is in the kernel tree but cannot be found from the menuconfig.

Love sources are moving too fast for my taste. I think I'll be back with good "old" gentoo-dev-sources soon - need something to trust....

Quote:
What happened for the config_hz patch that was in 2.6.6-rc2-love1?

Is it out of love for ever? If yes, why? And where can I find that patch?

Problem 2:
Both of these version should have dxr3 support but I really can't find it

For dxr3 sub-menu to show up, some I2/C options have to be selected (as mangle-bit protocol).
Have successfully compiled dxr3, but not yet tried.

Maybe some option is missing. Please look at the 'The Gentoo Framebuffer, Bootsplash & Grubsplash How-To' [https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=49036&highlight=love+sources]

I get a problem with my mouse. It works fine in 2.6.5-love4 but now the side-buttons won´t work until I unplug the mouse and plug it in again!
So every reboot I have to do this if I want to use those buttons.

It´s a MS-Intelli-Optical USB mouse connected via adapter to PS/2

I know there are changes in the mouse-drivers, but I don´t know which function is responsible for this behavior.

dmesg|grep Mouse
for 2.6.5-love4
Code:
input: ImExPS/2 Generic Explorer Mouse on isa0060/serio1

and for 2.6.6-rc3-love3
Code:
input: ImExPS/2 Generic Wheel Mouse on isa0060/serio1

Any hint?

thx

I still have a problem with the Framebuffer, it stops after listing the HDDs at boot, same with bootsplash activated, and not.
Luckily X starts, so i can use the latest Love-source ;)

does someone know why andrew hasn't released for such a "long" time?

EDIT: my bootsplash only works partially, i.e. on bootup, it seems that bootsplash - or framebuffer to be more precise - thinks i've got 640x480 or 800x600 instead of 1024x768. it only uses a part the screen to print its messages. on reboot/shutdown however, it works just fine.
i have been using 2.6.5-love5 before, which worked perfectly. i tried re-emerging bootsplash, but that didn't help.
any ideas? just tell what info you need.

thanks

i think i found a memory leak in this release. i'm not sure about it, but i've reverted back and found that this behavoir is gone again.
