I decided to contibute my cycles to the GLUE team as well... but I'll 'fess up that they're from my work laptop which is nearly always booted into Win2k instead of Gentoo. Soon maybe I'll get one or two of my desktop boxen up with Jen Tutu (that's "Gentoo, too" for you non-English-speaking types). |

Update: Well, I know it's running cause it's using roughly 99.6% of the processor... YEEHAH! Now if only I could monitor what it was doing, I'd be in heaven. |
Isn't there a FAHlog.txt log-file in the directory where FAH-client is doing its work?

Was I suppoed to create an account somewhere first? And if so, am I just giving someone else credit for my WU's?

yes, they are wrong. I have never seen a start date for a user that is correct. |

Is there a GLUE team for Genome@Home (http://genomeathome.stanford.edu/), too?
If not, perhaps I should create one... |

i just looked at the folding.stanford.edu page to get a new client and noticed something ... there's 2 FAH linux clients...
from http://folding.stanford.edu/linux.html#whichClient :
Quote: | Due to changes in certain new distributions of Linux, we now provide two editions of the Linux console. Functionally, they are identical, but they have different compatibilities. We continue to provide unchanged the same edition we have been and if you have been using this without incident, continue with it.
The new second one ("Linux Console B") is intended for machines which have glibc2.3 or higher. In practice, this usually means machines running new distributions like Mandrake 9.1 (and Gentoo / Redhat 9.0 / etc.). If you run the traditional "Linux Console" on such a distribution, you will encounter trouble getting work assignments, and if you try running the "Linux Console B" on machines with older versions of glibc, the program likely will not even start. |
the New FAH client (v3.24) is @
URL http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/release/FAH3Console-LinuxB.exe
MD5 a3f27b7c6403e9a81e424bd2b7c935dd
so far, there is no new ebuild, but if you modify the ebuild and delete/rebuild the digest file, it installs and works just fine.
I think that a new ebuild with a depend check on the version of glibc installed would be a good idea, but i'm not sure if a new ebuild is necessary or not.
suggestions ? |

Oh, my! So many choices about how to use my CPU cycles for a good cause.
This sounds a little more practical and useful potentially than Seti, although I never know when we're gonna find the alien. Wouldn't want to miss out. |

IMO, folding@home is currently the best cause. I'm already folding for another team though (Sudhian Media, 10688). Sorry! I'll probably waste some CPU cycles for a Gentoo team if you find another good cause. |

a little late, but joined!
seems like time better served than SETI...although i wonder what will happen to the person who owns that computer that discovers intelligent life (when/if it happens) you think that computer would go on ebay for a couple hundred bucks? hahaha |

Not sure anyone noticed, but moved up a few notches today. We are at 109 in rank right now.
Only the first 100 are shown on the stats front page. Good work guys, we
started later than a lot of others, but looks like we might be in the top 100 very soon. |

Is there a way to transfer work units one did with no team to GLUE? I just joined it, but my first 15 or so units were done without a team and. I'd be glad to count them all under GLUE ... |

Looks like this page might do that. Little hard to see for sure. I know I seen how to somewhere before, but can't find it.
See if this page will do it though.

Don't know if this is something that has just happened to me or not.
I looked at the log file FAHlog.txt and it has been trying to connect to the server for several days. I tried to run foldingathome in the /opt
folder and it segfaults.
Been running this app for quite awhile. Has some update done this or is it just on my system. Haven't gone much into it.
Running an strace the last item is:
Code: | write(4, "\300R\r\10\0\0\0\0\20\366\377\277P\210\4\10\244\207-\10"..., 148) = 148
rt_sigprocmask(SIG_SETMASK, NULL, + Attempting to get work packet
- Connecting to assignment server
upeek: ptrace(PTRACE_PEEKUSER,3214,44,0): Operation not permitted
|
But that just looks like it is from trying to do a strace on it. Hmm, not sure what is going on.
Next day: Checked with emerge and didn't have the package installed. Must have installed from download at Stanford before, or portage messed up. Still, reinstalled and working again. |

I usually run the client in 'screen', then I can check on its progress anytime, anywhere!
By the way, I just realized that one of the accounts I have been using wasn't assigned to any team! Just joined GLUE on that acct, let's break #100!!!! |

I don't think any value could or should be attached to the actual computer. IF there is an actual computer, that is; if there is a discovery, it will doubtless be rechecked and reconfirmed by many other computers. |

Hey fellow folders. I am thinking of breaking with my current team (2cpu.com/dallen) and going with a linux based team. Does the GLUE team have a team captain and is this team/site really committed to the folding project? |

There's a GLUE team for most of the major distributed computing projects it seems - with different people heading each effort. |

are the points based on speed of some kind, the workunit's importance or some other factor? |

I don't quite know yet
but my first two work units, which in total didn't seem to take a day got me a total of 15 points, and then this bad boy which took well over a day (2?) was worth 70
I'm thinking they may have some algorithm that noticed my quick turn around time on the first 2 units, and sent me something larger to deal witth because i was capable of it. Only fairly it's worth more points.
I know any more than that tho |

I just joined the Folding GLUE team this past week. You may have noticed that I'm already rated #56 in the team. I think we could have a lot more users folding if I can become 56th on the team in one week. I noticed that the team actually dropped to 110 in the rankings as well.
I'm contributing 4 computers to the GLUE cause.
Come on guys, lets make the top 100 _________________ My Folding@home Stats!

ok, i'm trying to change the niceness, but my question is how to change the niceness of the FahCore_65.exe process.
when i change the niceness that calls foldingathome in the init script, it only affects the niceness of the foldingathome process (which appears to be pointless because the core process is what seems to eat the processor cycles, not the foldingathome process) but it does not do anything to the niceness of the core. the core still runs at a niceness of 19. |

It's weird that nobody talked about distributed.net. It may not be as 'ethical' as F@H but it's still an important project. Currently, they're trying to break the RC5-72 encryption algorythm. Since I'm #4 of my team (Everything2), I'm not sure I want to switch to F@H. And because of me, Linux-client work units beat FreeBSD-client work units in my team. But still, distributed.net estimates that the RC5-72 (that's the RC5 algo, 72 bits) will be completed in about 550,000 days at the current rate. 1500 years... Sheesh... All right, I'm emerging F@H!
