gentoo sources 2.4.22 and framebuffer

After reinstalling Gentoo from stage1 i temporary use old kernel (2.4.20, just bzImage, without any *.dep) And console was just nice - 1024x768x16. After installing 2.4.22 somthing stgange happens - strange ugly resolution, strange white line in top of screen that blank sync with cursor, fbset says that mode 640x480... return to old kernel.. 1024... But i lost 2.4.20 sources and cant run any modules.
Tryed to install nvidia_kernel 4363... nothing
I have GeForce MX.. i need to on "Riva support.." only, or vesa 2.0 too?

Is it really matter to instal kernel sources with -k or without?

the riva fs suport in the kernel is broken - don't use it...
Choose the vesafb option and try again...
