well, your parents dont have to download it if they dont want to
SCNR

seriously: some people quite often do good arts. of course, 100% of them are a mater of individual taste. however, if they would do their stuff transparent - then the bg color doesnt matter and it would satisfy far more people. thats what i wanted to point out.

What have my parents with this to do?

Well, the blue one is nice but the green is pretty shabby. I would also say to make the bg transparent.

It's not too hard to make it transparent on your own. I GIMP'd it to be transparent in about fifteen seconds. :P

Perhaps, but I think that the original artist should do it if it is requested.

Thanks for all the comments. I am going to offer a transparent one soon, too.

BTW: That's how the silent splash is going to look like:
http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~soma/pingoo/pingoo_silent.png
And that's the verbose splash:
http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~soma/pingoo/pingoo_verbose.png
Yet, I'm still working on them.

The silent is fantastic... The verbose less so.

You should find somewhere else to put the penguin, not in a bar on the bottom.

Needed a break from studying for my finals...tried to imagine myself somewhere far away from the books and ended up in space.

Edit: For those of you who asked, the scene was entirely done by hand, it not taken from some space photo.

I hope you like it.

 Download

Regular version (purple):
1600x1200 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18389
1280x1024 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18391
1024x768 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18393
800x600 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18395

Alternate version (orange):
1600x1200 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18390
1280x1024 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18392
1024x768 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18394
800x600 - http://kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18396

Note: lower resolution versions appear to have less stars...the down side of making things in 1600x1200 then scaling down.

PS: mods might want to change the title of this topic. Since we're not allowed to post seperate wallpaper topics, the title April - August is a bit misleading.

My opinions of them, they may be a bit harsh but ah well.

tihkal: The colours are good, but I think it needs more - it looks a bit too cartoony for my liking.

shift (original one): That looks, well, wow. I wouldn't like to use it as a desktop image though (I don't really like dark desktops), but as a splash image or console background it would be cool.

Raffi: Good work with Pov-ray - I probably couldn't even do that background -, but it doesn't really fit in with my view of what Gentoo is. Some text on it would be good, for example "With Gentoo your computer will fly".

AGM: Too Mac.

shift (starry ones): Same as before really, I wouldn't like them as a desktop but something else, wow. I wonder whether it would be possible to make something like that, but the stars move / twinkle as a console background?

Well I suppose thats enough of me critiscing other peoples work for today, here are some of my own (well screenies anyway). They aren't really that Gentoo-ish, or even very computerish but I like them.
The Link
I have teal / green and red ones too. :D

At the moment I don't actually use them - I am in love with the "You'll Like Us" Gentoo wallpaper on KDE-look.
I also used the blending function of KDE to make it look reallllyyyyy sweet.

I wanted to share this will my fellow Gentoo'ers as perhaps many of you dont frequent that site.

I just recently made a Gentoo devoted splash theme for KDE and a few days ago designed a wallpaper with Gentoo in mind, but since it was so well received, I decided to brand it for everyone distro out there...

The Splash screen can be found here:

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18512

The wallpaper can be found here:

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=18356

Hope you guys enjoy them.

Wonderful! Just the way I like it - nothing distracting on the actual desktop, but a small treat for the eye in the corner. :)

How can I apply the background? I'm using Openbox and Esetroot. I don't think Esetroot supports alpha transparent wallpapers. Any tools which I can use to be able to apply your wallpaper?
