My host informs me that the server failed and data is being restored right now. It should be available soon.

anyone who wants a fbsplash bootsplash built with one of these backgrounds, PM it to me. i would make it and email it to anyone.

please just format a request like
Quote:

id like this as a bootup fbsplash logo
-imagelink-
here is where to send it
-your@email
the resolution you would like it to be
-fooxfoo

i would make them up as i had time, bzip them, and email them too you.

by the way, fbsplash is masked in portage but the new gentoo-dev-sources are pre patched for it.

Ok, I uploaded a newer version of the gentoo glass wallpaper. I used 3D Studio Max 6 with Mental Ray. So this image has caustics and looks more realistic in my opinion.
Without further ado:

Since I'm a 3d artist I want to crit you on some things. Shading is nice, the lighting is nice etc. You need to do a few things, like make the text not so this-is-obviously-3d-bezier-beveled-from-2d-profile-text, maybe it;s just that I've done too much of that, maybe not. The colors are gentoo-esque enough, too bland. The ground color seems too dark for the rest of the scene, maybe not. And it lacks shadows, it needs atleast a GIsh look.

Great work overall, BTW what app/renderer?

The Image was done with 3D Studio Max 4.2.
Unfortunately that version of Max has no Global Illumination or Caustics.
I would really like to do something like this the proper way, GI, Caustics, etc. To make it look really good. But I'll have to wait until I get my hands on some Software that can do that.
I know Blender+Yayfray can, but It will take a while before I'm comfortable enough with that program to attempt anything even slightly complex.

With this Image and several others which I haven't uploaded yet, I wanted to see if I could create that typical glossy "poster" look with Max 4.2.

The ground is a plane, which is black and is set to have a Falloff reflection. A bit above it is another plane which is completely white and set to 100% self-illumination. The lightness of the ground plane changes depending on at which angle the camera looks at it. The gentoo letters are not self reflecting. In Max (and probably any other 3D app), raytracing reflections AND refractions on the same object takes ages if you apply raytracing antialiasing. I cheated a bit, I let the gentoo letters reflect a sky texture to save on rendering time. I noticed this gave them a hint of blue. I like blue so I stuck with that.

I have a few other Images, but they are all at 1024x768 resolution. So I'm gonna re-render them at 1600x1200 before I upload them to Deviantart.

Awesome! :D

It looks more like a transparent inflatable thing than glass though - the inner bends make it look that way. From my point of views, at least.

Nice. Any chance of a 4:3-scaled version? Like 1600x1200 or 1280x960 ?
