I've got an Abit NF7-S motherboard, and the serial ATA works great in linux thanks to the 2.6 kernel. However, its time to get more drives and swap old drives out of the desktop machine and into the auxiliary server. I only have 2 SATA connectors, one is being used by an 80 gig SATA hard disk. The other has an old school IDE drive with a SATA converter attached. I'm probably going to buy one of these http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-148-018&depa=1
Teh hotness no? It will replace the drive with the converter on it which will leave my machine. I'm also planning on getting the recently announced plextor PX-712A. http://www.plextor.com/english/products/product_708Advdrw_drives.html
However, as you will see they are also making a serial ata version of this drive. I would like to get the serial ata drive to reduce the amount of ribbon cable in my box. But, I don't have any more free serial ata connectors.
So... are pci serial ata controllers worth it performance wise or am I better off using ribbon cable? How good is the linux support for pci sata cards? Should I get the plextor of old school or new school? Thanks for help. |
