Btw, anyone find out about the font a talk about above ??? I cant switch to phoenix cause of the font setting. |
I'm experiencing the same problem since I like using verdana & AA. The binary of phoenix is probably compiled against GTK 1.X which doesn't work well with Xft. In the GIMP 1.2.x I get the same problem, no fancy Xft fonts. Hopefully everybody (including apps) will migrate to GTK 2.X as soon as possible |

You use the --remote option. (phoenix --help will help). I have a script that does this:
Code: | mozilla -remote "openURL($@, new-tab)" |
And then I call the script with
This will open URLs in a tab in the already open mozilla/phoenix (works for both) whichever is open. |

|
|
Ok, with a bit of experimenting, information from this thread and a little bash programming, I've come up with the following script to launch phoenix, which I store as /usr/local/bin/phoenix
Code: | #! /bin/bash
export MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME="/opt/phoenix"
/opt/phoenix/phoenix -remote "openURL($@, new-tab)"
if [ $? == 2 ]; then
/opt/phoenix/phoenix $@
fi |
I use the nightly binary which I unpack in /opt, so you may need to change /opt/phoenix to match where you have phoenix installed. Also if you prefer the link come up in a new window you can replace new-tab with new-window, or leave it off (and remove the comma) if you want it to replace what's already in the window.
To get gaim to launch links with it, set it to custom browser command of phoenix %s
To make it your default browser in gnome run gnome-default-applications-properties and set a custom browser of phoenix %s (This makes gnome-terminal links launch in phoenix, etc)
I haven't been able to get get nautilus to launch web pages in phoenix, so if anyone knows how to add a new program as a browser (I've poked around gnome-file-types-propetries with no luck) let me know.
When using the phoenix-bin ebuild, replace all occurances of /opt/phoenix with /usr/lib/phoenix and edit the existing /usr/bin/phoenix instead of storing it as /usr/local/bin/phoenix
Also these issues may or may not occur when using the phoenix from source ebuild...let me know if they do/don't
Hope this helps... |

Just found out that the phoenix-bin ebuild is included in portage now. It is still in "unstable/testing" however (see: http://www.gentoo.org/news/20021020-stabletest.html). To enable portage to temporarily install test ebuilds on your computer type (from a prompt):
Code: | export ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"
|
Of course enter your architecture if it isn't x86... Phoenix 0.4 is also out now. You'll be happy to know that by simply changing the two 0.3's to 0.4's in the ebuild you have a nice 0.4 ebuild. You will need to ebuild ... digest of course after your download the file.
Happy browsing. 0.4 seems faster to me. Any one else notice this? |

My nautilus uses the gnome-default-applications-properties, but maybe yours isn't gtk2? Try setting in gnomecc (gnome 1.4) too. |

Hmmmm... I'm not sure what your problem is, but take a look at this screenshot of Slashdot that I took a few days back.

I can't see the screenshot unavailable....
For the font I use the Agfa monotype font in mozilla which are darn great. For some reason phoenix cant see it and I try the monotype only but its worse then the default setting....
I wish I can show you my mozilla font right now ...
Dont have any place where I can host it. |

Yes I found the way to fix it and make my Agfa font appear in phoenix. I found the trick from this thread : https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=20393
Basicaly you need to edit opt/pheonix/defaults/pref/unix.js
and change in the TrueType section :
pref("font.FreeType2.enable", false); to
pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true);
and add your font dir : //pref("font.directory.truetype.3", "/u/sam/tt_font3");
YEah goodbye mozilla |

Not guaranteeing how it'll work, but I modified the 0.3 ebuild very little to download 0.4. I have it hosted here: http://users.adelphia.net/~rabidpenguin/phoenix-bin-0.4.ebuild
I'm just using it as a test of my shiny new webspace. (Yes, I know it's a very simple modification, but I guess it's good for the lazy. :)) |

Wow! This is great! I suppose I was wrong (in a good way!) about the fonts being related to GTK.
And now Phoenix 0.4 uses GTK styling instead of psuedo-windows. Things just keep improving! |

hehheheh Well the font in phoenix is not as good as mozilla and I dont know why. I had to increase the font size to remove the blury (sorry I dont remember the exact word in english)
But it is a good improvement. By the way, why in phoenix in the font section there is only 3 choice for the font serif sans serif and monospace. In mozilla you have more than that. |

I am using the 0.3 binary ebuild and am ahving some problems, First and most important is the fonts I changed the entries in the unix.js file but still cant get any agfa fonts. Here is the freetype stuff ...
Code: |
// TrueType
pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true);
pref("font.freetype2.shared-library", "libfreetype.so.6");
// if libfreetype was built without hinting compiled in
// it is best to leave hinting off
pref("font.FreeType2.autohinted", true);
pref("font.FreeType2.unhinted", false);
// below a certian pixel size anti-aliased fonts produce poor results
pref("font.antialias.min", 10);
pref("font.embedded_bitmaps.max", 1000000);
pref("font.scale.tt_bitmap.dark_text.min", 64);
pref("font.scale.tt_bitmap.dark_text.gain", "0.8");
// sample prefs for TrueType font dirs
//pref("font.directory.truetype.1", "/usr/share/fonts/truetype");
//pref("font.directory.truetype.2", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF");
//pref("font.directory.truetype.3", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype");
|
Another problem is it wont switch any of the themes. It says there is classic and modern. Clicking on one does change anything, Normally it says it will take effect after restarting, but it does nothing, and the theme preview is borked too. Also it wont let me install extensions. It says i dont have access to the chrome stuff. If i install as root it works okay as root but i get errors when starting up as normal user. I really want the tab extension as it lets you open all links in a new tab on a normal click like in galeon. Something i dont think i can get along without Just so used to it. Well other than this stuff i think phoenix is GREAT!@# I look forward to when i can unmerge galeon and all thoe stupid gnome libs and junk |

Hi,
I was wondering why the ebuild depends upon XFree 4.2? Obviously this works fine under older versions so this seems an odd dependancy.
I hope no one else has asked this, didn't see it when I was looking through the posts.
Cheers

Okay a little bit of tinkering around and here is my unix.js file
Code: |
// TrueType
pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true);
pref("font.freetype2.shared-library", "libfreetype.so.6");
// if libfreetype was built without hinting compiled in
// it is best to leave hinting off
pref("font.FreeType2.autohinted", true);
pref("font.FreeType2.unhinted", true);
// below a certian pixel size anti-aliased fonts produce poor results
pref("font.antialias.min", 10);
pref("font.embedded_bitmaps.max", 1000000);
pref("font.scale.tt_bitmap.dark_text.min", 64);
pref("font.scale.tt_bitmap.dark_text.gain", "0.8");
// sample prefs for TrueType font dirs
pref("font.directory.truetype.1", "/usr/share/fonts/truetype");
pref("font.directory.truetype.2", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF");
pref("font.directory.truetype.3", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype");
|
In my fonts preferences i have the following ...
Fonts for: Western
Proportianal: Serif Size: 12
Serif: Agfa Monotype-times new roman-iso8859-1
Sans-serif: Agfa Monotype-arial-iso8859-1
Monospace: Agf Monotype-courier new-iso8859-1 Size: 12
Display Resolution: System setting Minimum font size: 6
and this is the best i can get from www.yolinux.com (a great site btw they have everything there) http://sentience.0catch.com/phoenixuglyfonts.png If anyone has any tips to make my fonts look decent i would appreciate it The fonts on forums.gentoo.org dont look as good as in galeon either =/ but readable at least. |

pref("font.directory.truetype.3", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype");
|
Preferences ...
Fonts for: Western
Proportianal: Sans Serif Size: 12

Sans-serif: Agfa Monotype-arial-iso8859-1
Monospace: Agf Monotype-courier new-iso8859-1 Size: 12
Display Resolution: System setting Minimum font size: 10
Always use my: Fonts
It looks just like it does in galeon now Still having the problems with the extension and the themes though =/ Also does anyone know where i would submit a feature request for phoenix? Namely the ability to remember what tabs are open when you close it and open all those next time you open it(like galeon of course ) and autorefresh(i cant believe they dont have this in there) |

I have played around with the unix.js file a lot and I still do not understand how mozilla does the whole font thing. At this point I have really good AA-lots of trial and error-very little understanding.
Quote: | // TrueType
pref("font.FreeType2.enable", true);
pref("font.freetype2.shared-library", "libfreetype.so.6");
// if libfreetype was built without hinting compiled in

pref("font.FreeType2.autohinted", false);

// below a certian pixel size anti-aliased fonts produce poor results

pref("font.embedded_bitmaps.max", 1000000);
pref("font.scale.tt_bitmap.dark_text.min", 64);
pref("font.scale.tt_bitmap.dark_text.gain", "0.0");
// sample prefs for TrueType font dirs
//pref("font.directory.truetype.1", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype");
//pref("font.directory.truetype.2", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont");
//pref("font.directory.truetype.3", "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont");
|
If this is too blurry for you change
pref("font.FreeType2.unhinted", true);
to
pref("font.FreeType2.unhinted", false);
I have my truetype fonts installed in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype
additionally I installed freefonts and sharefonts
which are respectively located in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/freefont
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/sharefont
this in combination with :
Serif-
Agfa Monotype-times new roman-iso-8559-1
Sans Serif
Agfa Monotype-arial-iso-8559-1
Cursive-
microsoft-comic sans ms-iso-8859-1
Fantasy-
microsoft-trebuchet ms-iso-8859-1
Agfa Monotype-courier new -iso-8859-1
I have a 21" Monitor so I set the fonts sizes pretty large
Proportional 20
Monospae 18
Minimum 16
Thanks alot to the person who gave me this tip-Johto-found it in

So Phoenix0.4 comes with support for GTK1.4, doesn't it? So if i want AA, i will need to wait until it comes compiled against GTK2, or untile i compile it my self?? |

Yes, it is easy.
Change:

to
pref("font.FreeType2.unhinted", true);
