Howdy folks, I have gotten Gentoo installed on main system now and am trying to get everything set up the way I like. I'm having trouble with USB devices, specifically my Sony DSC-P5 Camera. I had it working in Red Hat 7.3 but have not been able to figure it out in gentoo yet. I tried mimicing(sp?) my Red Hat kernel but I'm still having problems.
I know the camera uses the USB-Mass Storage driver as well as UCHI or OHCI (can't remember which one but I think UHCI). I've also got SCSI support enabled. I've been through http://www.linux-usb.org and can't seem to find where my problem might be. Does anyone have any tips that might make my switch to gentoo easier? Should these modules be "written into the kernel" or insmoded after boot up? Or anything else like that? I'm at a loss here
Thanks folks

I tried in the kernel for my multi card reader which is supposed to be fully USB 2 compatible, and had no luck.
I'm interested in answers about this issue too.... |

Ok, I figured out how to make a Sony DSC-P5 Camera work. So this is going to be a little mini-how to assuming that one knows all the commands I'm going to type.
Ok, on the kernel recompile I made sure that everything I chose relating to the camera was a module (i.e. not compiled into the kernel) Those included
(M)-USB Support
(M)-USB Mass Storage support
(M)-USB UHCI support
(*)USB Preliminary Filestystem <-- This was compiled into the kernel
(M)-SCSI Support
(M)-SCSI Disk Support
(M)-SCSI generic support
Then under filesystems I made sure /proc was selected and the microsoft filesystems which my camera uses (FAT)
After all that I did my normal make dep bzImage modules modules_install and booted into my new kernel.
After reboot I did
Code: |
modprobe ide-scsi
modprobe usbcore
modprobe usb-uhci
modprobe usb-storage
|
Then I did a
to see if my camera was on scsibus:1 (which it was).
Then I did
to see which device was symbolically linked to the camera. Looked like this
Code: |
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Sep 25 12:37 /dev/sda -> scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 33 Sep 25 13:00 /dev/sdb -> scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc
lr-xr-xr-x 1 root root 34 Sep 25 13:00 /dev/sdb1 -> scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/part1
|
Since I knew my camera was on scsibus:1 from before I did a
Code: |
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/camera
|
to see if it worked and when it did I added it to my /etc/fstab.
No sweat huh? Only took me all afternoon
Remeber, I am by no means an expert but this worked for me, I hope it helps someone else out.[/code] |

Umm, I feel kind of stupid here, but where does SCSI come into the picture? Is the camera memory card seen as a SCSI disc or what? |

stingray72:
Do you have anything in your devfsd.conf for the sda* devices? I'm trying to get my Sony TRV25 to work. Everything sees the camear (usbview, /proc/scsi...), but theres no devices created for it when I turn it on (or bootup).
UPDATE:
Nevermind. I didn't have SCSI Disk support, which is why there was no device. Duh. |
