Could the friendly gentoo developers perhaps consider adding a feature that recognizes when a mirror is busy (maximum users reached), and automatically divert the client requesting an rsync to another mirror?

see this thread ... but this is an important topic which hasnt been discussed enough i think. so no locking on this thread please.

every dns entry has a TTL of 60 seconds - so if you connect to rsync.gentoo.org it randomly choses one host (remember we're using the round robin dns approach for loadbalancing) and remembers the address for the next 60 seconds before it does a new lookup. then it is possible that it gathers the same information again - or a diffrent one. so the best way would be doing a "host -t A rsync.gentoo.org" (of course no with the shell command but with a python method which should do the same), save all the ipaddresses mixed/randomized in an array and then connect by ipaddress instead of the hostname.
