I use 'umount /mnt/cdrom' where /mnt/cdrom is your entry in /etc/fstab.
Are you getting an error when trying? What is the error, and what is the full command you run to produce the error? _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

If you want it change CDs or something, you can also use 'eject'. Without parameters, it ejects the first CDROM device. If you want to eject a different one, you pass it the /dev/name.
I'm at work and so don't have my Gentoo machine available, you *may* not even need root to use eject. _________________ "Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy"
