I use 'umount /mnt/cdrom' where /mnt/cdrom is your entry in /etc/fstab.

Are you getting an error when trying? What is the error, and what is the full command you run to produce the error?

If you want it change CDs or something, you can also use 'eject'. Without parameters, it ejects the first CDROM device. If you want to eject a different one, you pass it the /dev/name.

I'm at work and so don't have my Gentoo machine available, you *may* not even need root to use eject.
