Here's an interesting problem...
I have a domain that I want to host myself, for several reasons. I can run what I want, when I want on it. I don't have to pay someone to do it. I get to learn how to do it.
Problem is, my cable company doesn't provide static IP addresses to their residential customers. In order to qualify, I need to pay $20 more per month (for the priveledge of a static IP) and they pay $100 set up fee. Needless to say, I find that a little rediculous. So, I'm in the market to "buy" a static IP of my own. Does anyone know if there are any resources for this? I'm really not interested in setting up something through someone like dyndns.org or another free dyn IP forwarding service. I'd like to set up my own DNS server, along with many other fun goodies to host on my domain, and I'd rather do it "by the book" as it were.
If someone could point me in the right direction, that'd be great.

You can setup a DNS server for local caching no problem, but you sound like you want to make it the SOA (Start of Authority) for a domain name. The way to do this with your dynamic IP is to put your current IP as the SOA with your domain name registrar. The problem is, when your IP changes, you'd have to change it at the registrar level as well, and wait for it to propogate around. That's the advantage of having a static IP.
There is no way to get around getting a static IP from your ISP. They are the ones your modem is currently getting your dynamic IP from via DHCP. There is no way around this. When you purchase a static IP from them, they allocate a static IP for you, and you put in the info.
For me, I have dynamic IP service from my DSL provider, but my ip hasn't changed in about 6 months, so I don't have any trouble with my DNS server. |

VirtuaSpy is correct. The only alternative is to get a different ISP who charges less or use one of those dynamic ip services.
I also have not seen my dynamic DSL IP address change in about 9 months or so. It keeps assigning me the same one. _________________ Gentoo: it's like wiping your ass with silk. |

My IP hasn't changed since I've had cable, which is going on 6 months now as well. But I know that as soon as I decide to do this, it'll change every day or so.
VirtuaSpy, you're correct, I do want to be SOA for my domain. And you're also correct, I can do it with my dyn IP, but the changes take 24-48 hours to propogate through the internet. It was that aspect that I want to avoid.
I know the cable company has it within their power to move me in to the static IP range... but what really sucks is that they want an additional $340 from me for the first year alone, and another $240/year after that. It was those costs I am trying to avoid, which is why I was hoping there was another resource for Static IPs. But, there isn't, so I guess I get to just suck it up. Thanks for the replies! _________________ Knowledge is Power // Power Corrupts // Study Hard // Be Evil |
