I grabbed the LiveCD-Gentoo-Reiser4.iso from here - am assuming that's the one I want to go with :?:

Has anyone been able to do any of the following from scratch on a Reiser4 / partition?

1) Install xfree?
2) Install xorg-x11?

They both error out using 2.6.4-ck2 as my kernel and 0.5.3 reiser4progs. The compiles work perfectly with a different file system.

If you succeeded, what kernel did you use and if you had to tweak anything, what was it?

Thanks --Joe

That makes me feel a bit nervous, as that is exactly what I'm doing now, about 30% done with emerge system. Soon after I boot into it, gonna do the X and KDE stuff.

cd sounds great but I can't use it on my laptop! =(. It lacks pcmcia and wireless support. Please add, or tell me how to add it onto the iso image myself. I've tried making my own cd using winrar a few months ago... didn't work out.

Yup, XFree86 failed. irssi failed, links failed (specifically the svgalib dependency), now i got links to compile with bare minimums.

XFree gave some unable to creat unshared directory /../../../../../../../../somedirectory msg like that.

That happened after 2 hours of compiling, I think I will give Xorg a shot now.

Bug report for xfree

Bug report for xorg-x11 - Make sure you read the developer's comment that closed it.

Unfortunately, this did not work out for me. The installation went fine, but after that almost nothing would compile, xfree, xorg-x11, irssi, links to name a few.

It was great while it lasted though, with Reiser4 it seemed that my harddrive was less taxed...rarely heard it "ticking away" or see the access lights. Even my old Quantum felt like it was running on silk lol.

Now as I reinstall on a ReiserFS 3.6, you can definitely notice the slowdowns and those extra "ticks".

Best of luck to anyone else attempting this. If you get it to work, it's great.

Edit: Forgot to mention, the bootup with Reiser4 flashed before my eyes, damn it was quick I didn't even get to see the FS being mounted and stuff lol!

i have done that, the errors u get are caused by a reiser4 kernel without the tail.c patch. the actual cause, is that timestamps are saved wrong, and that can make some packages too paranoid.

this is the kernel i recommend using:

@Redeeman

It would be nice if you could add a ITE RAID ( known as GigaRaid )
module to your livecd, there's no other livecd witch has this future...
Is it possibile?

the livecd lacks pcmcia support and appears to lack wireless lan support as well. I'm about to take a shot of trying to update your cd to support an install on my laptop. Ugh... this is looking complicated and I don't think I have the experiance to handle this yet...

the livecd has wireless stuff in kernel, it might just be that the modules dont get autoloaded.

just tell me if anything is missing, im soon gonna do a new release

the latest ITE RAID patch is in love-sources ( kernel & hardware forum... )

http://www.public.iastate.edu/~jpcox/

it will be great if you could add this patch!

the biggest problem is trying to start pcmcia on the livecd. There is no init.d autoload available.

Hi,

the liveCD doesn't work for me.
When I boot with it it I get a kernel panic because root file system wouldn't be found. I should add a root= Option. When I start it with
Code:
kernel root=/dev/hdb nodhcp noraid
where /dev/hdb is the cdrom I boot from I get a kernel panic because no initial console is found.
So what to do?
Is the liveCD corrupted? Should I download it again and then try again?

Regards,
Tassilo

Hi,

I downloaded it again, checked the md5sum with the one somebody posted in this thread. They're the same, so the LiveCD seems to be ok.

When I boot it with
Code:
kernel root=/dev/hdb
where /dev/hdb is my cdrom I boot from I get a kernel panic because of no initial console. The last output while booting is:
Code:
VFS: mounted root (iso 9660 file system) readonly.
mount_devfs_fs(): unable to mount devfs, err: -2
Freeing unused kernel memory: 164k freed
Warning: Unable to open an initial console.
Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel.

So it seems that the initial console can't be found because devfs can't ba mounted. But why?

Any help?

Regards,
Tassilo

Oh,

now it works. When I boot the LiveCD without any options like nodhcp it works.

Tassilo

I found a bug on reiser4 using your patch set :( I made a test partition to play with. I move mldonkey temp dir where it stores temp files to the reiser4 partition. Mldonkey keep saying file downloaded are corrupted because the md4 hashes are changed. Move it back to my reiserfs partition, and it's fine. Mldonkey's temp files are big files around 700 MB.
