hey Redeeman, got a link to your latest redeeman-6 patch for 2.6.5 vanilla kernel?

what does that patch include? reiser4 and everything else? or do I have to patch those things in myself?

also is it patched with

yeah, its a p4 patch. and yes, it contains reiser4 and stuff

I did a complete new install on a resier4 / partition.
works great. only when i resume wget downloads (emerge) i get it sometimes that the md5sums don't match. i never had that with other filesystems. i also have a problem starting evolution, but don't think it's reiser related, but you never know.

looking forward to a new live cd. I have one request:

I have an on-board Promise PDC20276 that I am running software raid 0 on (when I set system up the pseudo hardware support didnt work, and not sure if it does now).

I am going to convert my / to reiser4 for the heck of it (boardom and testing

But the kernel does not support my promise card (correctly).

In order for me to get going the option Enable controller even if disabled by BIOS needs to be set on in the kernel config, or my drives are not seen.

I would be more than happy to create a custom live disc... but i am not quite sure how to do it. If you have any good resources I would appreciate the help.

please please make sure you include pcmcia support in the next cd. I really want to get a reiser4 2.6 kernel system setup on my P MMX laptop. If anything is going to make it run fast, it is reiser4 and the 2.6 kernel but I need a good livecd so I can download and compile everything onto it! Thanks for your hard work to create this thing for those who 1)can't find time to figure one out for themselves 2)Don't want to figure it out 3)tried and failed 4)everyone else

yes, mine is p4, and btw, dont even bother put it on gentoo-dev-sources, it wont work.

Using redeem6 patch with a 2.6.5 kernel from kernel.org seems to be a good way to go. One question though:

When doing cp -Rpf to back up my root partition to another location, then formatting my root partioin to reiser4, finally putting all the data back on there, what about "/proc" and "/sys"? Do these need to be backed up? Are they real filesytems?

I downloaded 2.6.5 from kernel.org and patched with ...redeem6. What do I have to emerge to get "mkfs.reiser4" without downloading the LiveCD?

Will this do? sys-fs/reiser4progs

Well, I'll find out in a few minutes here. Damn, I can't wait to further supercharge this laptop!

Now, I do have the LiveCD and find that it does not finish booting on my Sony Viao Firewire Laptop CDROM.

Question: Can you add support to boot firewire all the way through?

I have been following these reiser4 threads since the beginning, and have always wanted to migrate when it was reasonable, as I only run ~x86 systems anyway. I must say you have done some really great work- and I really want to try this, but ran into a problem.

I'm on dialup only, but still managed to download and burn the live-cd. I got a new 40GB drive to devote to a reiser4/gcc-3.4 Gentoo install. After I did the partitioning, I knew your live cd kernel probably didn't support ppp, and there aren't the packages needed on it, so I was prepared to use a Knoppix cd for my usual hybrid "Knoppix/Gentoo live cd" Gentoo install method I developed for dialup, but then I realized I couldn't get Knoppix to recognize reiser4 partitions, so I couldn't download packages into distfiles, or even chroot over and get write access to my incomplete Gentoo installation.

I next created a reiser3 partition on the hard drive so I could get packages via Knoppix on there, and then copy them over to the reiser4 /. That works but is such an involved process, and when a package fails, I'm stuck with trying a new download, etc. It's just too much- unless there's a better way to do this under my specific conditions than I'm aware of.

Anyway, please- I implore you- on your next live cd, include ppp support in the kernel, and wvdial, wvstreams, and ppp packages on the live-cd. This would make it possible for us lowly dialup users to get into reiser4, and test it. These really aren't big packages, and would hardly add any size to the live cd. There are vastly more of us dialup Gentooists than one might think!

In the meantime, I have installed Gentoo on this drive on /boot, /, and swap, as a reiser3 install, and made 2 other large reiser3 partitions, so I can try copying / over to one of the extra "data" partitions, and using your live cd to change the / to reiser4, then copying / back to the original partition, as I read this was possible in the forum reiser4 threads. This method seems more problematic than using your live-cd, but I'm getting desparate for reiser4 here!

yeah, /proc, /sys and /dev should not be copied. however, if you are using udev. copy the console and null device
