i have done that, the errors u get are caused by a reiser4 kernel without the tail.c patch. the actual cause, is that timestamps are saved wrong, and that can make some packages too paranoid.

this is the kernel i recommend using:

Does your new LiveCD include the fixed tail.c?

Works very well here - just finished merging the system and need to figure out how to do the manual kernel install (know the instuctions are here somewhere, but can wait until tommorrow for that) :wink:
Thanks again Redeeman (and company) 8)

do you have a reiser4 root partition yourself ?

im going to reinstall my system today, and i really want to try out reiser4, but not if its proven unstable.

my main workstation is having XFS root, but some stuff on reiser4.

though, my laptop runs reiser4 only, + a test box running it completely, and also a production server running reiser4 only :D

I'm confused :?
When I do...
Code:
cd /usr/src/linux

I get...
Code:
bash: cd: /usr/src/linux: No such file or directory

But when I do...
Code:
ls -l /usr/src/linux

I get...
Code:
lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root 24 Apr 28 20:36 /usr/src/linux -> linux-2.6.5-lokean1

I did manage a bootable kernel (went into the source dir and did what I would do in "usr/src/linx", but ebuilds that require this symlink can't find it either. Got any idea what's going on here :?:

either browse to it manually, or perhaps change the link to point to /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-lokean1

ie:
Code:
server root # ls -l /usr/src/linux
lrwxrwxrwx    1 root     root           22 Apr 24 15:30 /usr/src/linux -> /usr/src/linux-2.4.22/

The symlink code I presented was not exactly a "cut and paste" job. :wink: I rechecked the symlink and it was pointing as you suggested. But you did get me thinking. I remembered deleting /usr/src/linux and remerging the kernel sources would take care of everything. It's all good now, thanks 8)

download it from a mirror.
ie
Code:
cd /mnt/gentoo
wget ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/gentoo/releases/x86/2004.1/stages/x86/stage1-x86-2004.1.tar.bz2

check out the install docs here

@Redeeman

When using your kernel patchset, which base kernel should I use to patch? Vanilla 2.6.5, -mm, or which other patches patched to Vanilla prior to use your patch?

Thanks.
