|
|
Hello,
until yesterday everything was working fine. Unfortunately I emerged some packages (world, system, vmware, rpm) and ran etc-update without taking care.
So I shot my sound configuration.
I have a SBLive! card running under emu10k1. I still have sound (at least I can listen to CDs) and everything seems to work.
But when I boot I see strange error messages:
"Missing kernel or user mode driver emu10k1" for several times
lsmod gives me:

I can although restart alsasound:
Code: |
/etc/init.d/alsasound restart
* ALSA Detected...
* Restoring Mixer Levels [ ok ]
|
I can even set the mixer levels using alsamixer.
So how can I get rid of those boot error messages ?
Any hints ? |

I did exactly the same. However, I thought I did pay attention to my etc-update. I have not seen any config for sound coming by. Nevertheless, sound works fine for me. Additional information (see "Intel 810" lines):

As you can see, I have two sound cards, and only one gives errors. Furthermore, no modules relating to my soundcard are loaded:
Code: |
root@telemachus sander # cat /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4
# /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4: kernel modules to load when system boots.# $Header: /home/cvsroot/gentoo-src/rc-scripts/etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4,v 1.1 2003/03/09 09:06:23 azarah Exp $
#
# Note that this file is for 2.4 kernels. If you need different modules
# for a 2.5 kernel, you can create /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.5
#
# Add the names of modules that you'd like to load when the system
# starts into this file, one per line. Comments begin with # and
# are ignored. Read man modules.autoload for additional details.
# For example:
3c59x
#ac97_codec
#i810_audio
#nvidia
#8139too

|
I would like to add that these errors appear right after:
Code: |
INIT: Entering runlevel: 3
* Starting input hotplugging [OK]
* Starting pci hotplugging [OK]
... can't load module i810_audio
"Missing kernel or user mode driver emu10k1
(these last two lines are repeated about 7 times)
|
So, any suggestions? Maybe this is a kernel related problem? Maybe hotplugging? |

I had this problem too. What I figured out through trial and error was that boot process was trying to load 2 different drivers for the same card in 2 different places. The kernel I compiled had the Intel ICH drivers (snd-intel8x0) used for ALSA and the OSS drivers (i810_audio). What I did to resolve this was to add the snd-intel8x0 driver to the file etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-2.4 and then added the i810_audio driver the file /etc/hotplug/blacklist. By adding the OSS driver version to the blacklist file it prevents the pci hotplugging service from trying to load the OSS driver. The hotplug service gets the list of drivers to load from depmod (which it gets its information from the System.map file, if I am not mistaken). This solution now loads the ALSA driveer and restores my mixer settings and removes the boot messages "... can't load module i810_audio " from the pci hotplugging. Makes for a cleaner boot. Granted I have only one sound card. |
