I have installed gentoo linux on Ultra Sparc10. The kernel is 2.2.26. On the first reboot (after making almost everything modular) I get the following problem :
Kernel panic: VFS: Cannot open root device "hda4" or 03:04

My silo.conf is:
partion = 1
root = /dev/hda4
timeout = 10
image = /kernel-2.2.26
label = linux
(in fact I have copied kernel-2.2.26 at / and as well as /boot)

My partitions of the disk is as given in the manual:
/dev/hda1 83 linux native
/dev/hda2 82 swap
/dev/hda3 whole disk
/dev/hda4 83 linux native
/dev/hda5 83 linux native
/dev/hda6 83 linux native

and fstab entries are as follows:
/dev/hda1 /boot ext2
/dev/hda2 none swap
/dev/hda4 / ext3
/dev/hda5 /usr
/dev/hda6 /home

I have been struggling with it for some time. Please help :(

You didn't make ext3 support a module, did you?

can you boot it manually outside of silo?- ie at the ok prompt type something like

ok: boot kernel-2.4.26 root=/dev/hda4

also - i'm not super familiar with the ultra series- does the ultra 10 have regular ide drives (hda) or scsi drives (sda)? that could be part of the problem too
