I'm trying to install Gentoo on my main system and chance seem to get grub to work. I have gentoo installed on my second haddisk and just told the bios to boot of that disk. I belive that I have grub set up right.
hdb1 = /boot
hdb2 = /swap
hdb3 = /
grub commands I used after starting grub
root (hd1,0)
setup (hd1)
quit
menu.lst file
----------------------------------
default 0
timeout 20
splashimage=(hd1,0)/boot/grub/splash.zpm.gz
title=Gentoo
root (hd1,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage root=/dev/hdb3
------------------------------------------------
When I try to reboot the system I just get a sprean saying GRUB in the corner. could anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong. _________________ Java, the 3rd coming of Cobol

There's a possibility that changing your BIOS settings could effectively renumber the drives as GRUB sees them. Are you installing GRUB with the BIOS settings the way they will be when booting? _________________ For every higher wall, there is a taller ladder |

I have done the grub setup both ways. When the bios settings where set to boot ide0 drive0 and when the bios was set to boot ide0 drive1. Guess I will do the good old copy the boot sectors and have windows try and boot it trick. Anyone know if that still works with XP. Has been many years since I dual booted a machine. _________________ Java, the 3rd coming of Cobol

I've never had a good time of trying to get the nt bootloader to boot linux. Sure, it works, but it's always been a pain, however I've successfully used grub to dual boot linux and win2k. I'm not sure if XP's boot system is the same as 2k, but it's worth a shot. |

You might want to investigate the map command mentioned in the Grub Manual. _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

Actually I messed up yesterday and wrote over drive0's MBR with grub and it all worked just fine so I told grub to load XP too. not the way I wanted to do it but it works so I can live with it. _________________ Java, the 3rd coming of Cobol

That is what I was planning on doing in the first place, just have window's bootloader load up grub. maybe I will change the way I do it someday but I'm not worried about it. _________________ Java, the 3rd coming of Cobol
