UT2004 Benchmark scores:

XFree86 4.3: 39
XORG: 31

Switching back to XFree for a while...

I am runnig xorg since 2 month ... might be a little bit less or more.

Its running fine - but sometimes, xorg freezes my pc - mouse is working, sound, and all other things too, but keyboard and graphics are locked - no <ctrl-alt-backspace> to get it working again.

Only way to get around is to login from another machine per ssh or telnet and kill the process or to make cold reboot - thats a little bit annoying.
The logs dont show any eror report or something else to figure out why it happened, anyone else have this problem?

I will go back to xfree for now, because the performance is the same on my system, but it dont freezes like xorg sometimes.

best regards

Just installed xorg on my laptop without any problems. Didn't even need to change any of the XF86Config. It seems to run just as fast, if not faster. Unfortunately I have not been able to test any games.

Fixed Opera 7.5: emerge corefonts. Seems the X.Org ebuild doesn't list it as a dependence, and Opera defaults to other (similar) fonts that don't look as well. You may need to delete your opera.ini in ~/.opera aswell as it doesn't have an option to rollback to default fonts.

As for booting speed, it seems to boot a bit faster than XFree did in my system. It's not an incredible difference, but it's noticeable.

I LOVE it! :D

I just emerged it in, had to restart XFS and boom. Was done in about oh an hour or so.

It's FASTER, and uses less memory than Xfree! Xfree tended to balloon on me to almost 320 Mb total usage. Xorg is 176 Mb!!!!!! And my fonts look cleaner! LOL

Couldn't have been more painless. 3 commands:
Code:
# emerge -C xfree
# ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge xorg-x11
# etc-update

and that was IT! Everything worked flawlessly the first time. Excellent work! I have an nvidia GF3 ti500.

I have only good things to say about xorg. It seems to be faster than xfree. It also fixed my mouse wheel problem. Everything seems to integrate nicely (like nvidia drivers). Can't wait for more improvements to come :)

For me the switch to xorg was completely painless! Faster startup times is really appreciated! ;)

Am I the only person who isnt impressed by Xorg...???

My gdm (or entrance) loads like shit since I installed Xorg.
With Xfree my init.d/xdm would start and immediately display my DM (GDM or Entrance). Now with Xorg I first get to see that X-checkers field (the black and white) with the crappy black cross for 3 seconds before I see my DM....

I that normal behaviour or did I do something wrong.

Upgrading to the 6.7.0-r1 didn't solve it btw.

Upgrading to r1 screwed up Xinerama for me, or at least that was the only thing I could find that changed. Still haven't fixed it yet.

Everything was running soooo nicely 'till I emerge -u system
How do I do this in the future so that I update xorg-x11 NOT xfree86?
(I had to un-install xfree86 and re-install xorg-x11)
Ximian office blew up and KDE was all screwed. Who do we push to get X.Org as the portage default? NOTE: Many of the other O/S's are switching.

Box: PII - 350 Mhz
256 Meg Ram <- this is KEY!
5 Gig HD
Cheezy CD-ROM
Crummy graphics card

Just have to say this: Gentoo runs on this piece of crap box like it has no business. I've had Mozilla, Ximian OpenOffice and a couple of other apps running. For a beater machine, Gentoo makes it run way faster than it has any right to. This O/S is simply awesome. Thanks to all the folks who have spent so many sleepless nights obsessing about it.

Very easy switching over from XFree - not one problem. A much more stable/solid feel to it, and it does seem to load a little faster. I would like to see the "gray" portion of the X-Org load sequence display changed to just a "black" screen.

Except for the stupid grey startup screen, it works just fine on both my x86 and a64. I do wish someone would try to figure out how to get rid of the nonfunctional grey startup screen!

i'm using xorg since it appeared in portage.... it works fast and smooth, it solved problems with my radeon card (noise on the screen at hi-res, like 1280 or 1600) but i have a big problem: if i start two opengl applications everything freezes! cold reboot is needed, no way to log using ssh.....

and, if i launch mplayer like this:

Code:

mplayer -fs movie*

the my workstation locks when mplayer starts playing the second movie...

Ximian office blew up and KDE was all screwed.

Code:
mkdir -p /etc/portage
echo "xorg-x11  ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords

That's a generally better way to use unstable packages than using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS on the command line...
