I'm having this problem on two different machines running 1.4rc1. On the laptop I have set everything up but I accidently left a line out of menu.lst. When I reboot with the cd and mount the boot partition to
Code:
 mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/gentoo/boot,
. Once I'm inside of the linux shell when I cd into /boot the only thing there is lost+found. What am I doing wrong??? I have the same problem on another machine when I tried to update the kernel, I ended up with bzImage in a directory with lost+found, no grub...

Hi there:
It sounds as if grub isn't installing itself in your boot partition. To install grub in /dev/hda2 (and to have it write on the MBR), you would type:
Code:

grub
root (hd0,1)
setup (hd0)
quit

Hope this helps.

Grub is installed, it comes up on boot up. I just can't find it in the filesystem.

If you mount it to /mnt/gentoo/boot, shouldn't you 'cd /mnt/gentoo/boot'?

if you mounted /dev/hda2 to /mnt/gentoo/boot and chrooted /mnt/gentoo/ and your chrooted /boot/ is still empty, then you did not extract the stagex files corectly or you extracted it while you did not have /dev/hda2 mouted to /mnt/gentoo/boot.

try the following:
Code:
umount /mnt/gentoo/boot
umount /dev/hda2

then do:
Code:
ls /mnt/gentoo/boot

if you see files in this directory, then you need to move them to your /dev/hda2 and try again with grub.

after the move just do:
Code:
mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/gentoo/boot
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
source /etc/profile
grub
root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
quit

or you can try with the grub installer:
Code:
grub-install /dev/hda

cheers

steve
